DACOR Bacon House wedding – E+C – Washington, DC

What a cute little gem the DACOR Bacon House is in the middle of downtown DC! When I first met with E+C on a very cold winter evening, I’d heard of the venue but it would be a new shooting experience for me which is always fun. It’s a charming historic house at 18^th & F NW with lots of fun nooks and crannies for photos and a wonderful garden patio, perfect for an outdoor wedding in early May. The weather didn’t look like it would completely cooperate (but it did!) so the patio was tented but the wedding took place by the lovely trellis and marble table. I loved how much humor and warmth came through as they took their vows. Dinner was inside in the warm and inviting upstairs rooms of the house including a chandelier in the main room lit by candles. Dancing was back in the patio area where friends and family (and E’s adorable niece) kept the dance floor busy!

Airlie Center wedding – Warrenton, Virginia

Couples come to me in a variety of ways. Word of mouth recommendations, online or from others in the wedding business. Sometimes they call a year ahead of time, often six to nine months and occasionally a month or two out. Elizabeth + David were in the latter group. And as much as I like to have my schedule planned out in advance, it’s always fun to have a few last minute weddings thrown into the mix. I didn’t get to meet them before the wedding but from phone calls and emails I got a pretty good sense of them as a couple. Accomplished journalists getting married at Airlie Center–one of my favorite sites in the area–on an beautiful spring day proved to be a recipe for a fabulous day. Surrounded by their immediate family, the couple decided to forego a traditional wedding party keeping their siblings closest to them on their wedding day. And in turn, both sets of sibs delivered hysterical toasts. Some of my favorite photos of the reception were Elizabeth + David’s reaction to their speeches. There were so many great moments during the day–the lower garden ceremony, the few minutes just after the ceremony where they put their rings on the proper fingers–it was very appropriate for a journalism couple that it was the moments that mattered.

Park Hyatt wedding – Washington, DC

To say that food was a priority at the wedding of Katy and David is an understatement. They are the owners of Eat Place in Petworth – the site of their adorable engagement session earlier this year. The Park Hyatt was the perfect host for their big day. And for me, it was a lovely marriage of food photography and wedding work. I knew Katy would be a stylish bride and not just because of her planned wardrobe change into a gorgeous red dress during the reception. I know I’m there to document the moments but I could have spent an hour just photographing her shoes! Both pairs were so cool. I also loved the décor for their reception. The ballroom was glowing in pink and orange and the centerpiece with real oranges and spices and on every table a jar of Katy’s hot sauce. Another fun touch was that during the reception no one was allowed to clink glasses to get the bride & groom to kiss..they had to get up and perform which led to some very amusing group poems and tributes.

Washington, DC spring wedding engagement sessions

Spring is a beautiful time to be taking photos as a wedding and engagement photographer in Washington DC, I do manage to avoid formal sessions in the middle of the cherry blossoms but only because there are so many other glorious options to find blooms in the spring in DC.

Three recent sessions included the National Portrait Gallery, the National Gallery of Art Sculpture Garden , the columns at and gigantic door at the National Archives including a floor strewn with confetti after the annual Cherry Blossom Parade and even some trees near the Archives metro station. Another one of my favorite spots any time of year for wedding engagements is Dumbarton Oaks in Georgetown where the honeysuckle was in bloom.

I love photographing couples for their wedding engagement portraits. It’s such a great way to get to know them before I photograph their wedding and it allows us to explore some other locations besides where they’ll be getting married!!

Army Navy Club winter wedding in Washington, DC

I first met Suzanne and Ben when I arrived in NYC at the end of October for their engagement shoot. Their apartment overlooking the city was breathtaking and our whirlwind tour of their neighborhood and dinner at the fabulous Momofuku Noodle Bar and dessert from Momofuku Milk Bar were definitely foodie highlights of the trip for me. They aren’t native New Yorkers but you’d never know it—it’s always so cool for me to get shown around by people who know where they’re going! Suzanne is a decisive bride and knew that she wanted an elegant and sophisticated winter wedding. The colder the better. They got their wish with 30 degree temperatures but they were prepared–I loved her wrap and her white gloves—it just epitomized a winter wedding. They had their first look at the Hay Adams overlooking the White House and we then proceeded by vintage car driven by Suzanne’s uncle, to a church service at Memorial Metropolitan United Methodist Church near American University. Their reception at the Army Navy Club continued their theme and also included a rollicking dance party and the most fun photo booth I’ve had seen in some time. Full head masks on people in eveningwear, made for some very fun photos. 2015 is starting out on a very high note. I can’t wait photograph all the other wonderful couples I’ve got lined up for this year.

My first wedding engagement session of 2015 was with Katy + David in their restaurant/kitchen space Eats Place, in Petworth, DC. In addition to showcasing Katy’s dumplings, they hosts guests chefs and and pop up eateries. It was great fun to explore their space inside and out, including the downstairs kitchen and a quick upstairs visit with their adorable pup. Their wedding is this Saturday at the Park Hyatt, a mecca for foodie weddings.

The Park Hyatt is one of my favorites locations for elegant and modern weddings in DC.

Baltimore, Maryland winter wedding

Quite a few aspects of Ana + Jeremy’s small November wedding appealed to me while a couple more presented an interesting challenge. I love a small wedding as a change of pace and it’s always cool being in Baltimore. A small dinner reception at a great pizza restaurant before the ceremony mixed it up even further. The tricky part was the 9 pm ceremony in the dark at Patterson Park Pagoda. I had some familiarity with the site having done Hannah + Hal’s engagement photos there in April. My day with Ana + Jeremy’s started with their first look just before sunset in the park. As the light faded we explored inside and around the Pagoda and then we returned there much later in the evening for the ceremony. Thankfully the building was glowing from the inside which made for my favorite photos of the day just after sunset. It was tough to leave the warmth of the restaurant (with awesome custom pizzas) and head out into the chilly night for the ceremony. But it was pretty magical on a still dark night in the midst of the city to watch Ana and Jeremy get married while surrounded by their nearest and dearest. It was a pleasure working with event planner Stephanie Bradshaw who was nice enough to put a little bit about the wedding on her blog as well. Below are some of my favorite shots from the day.

All my weddings are special to me. When a couple chooses me to be their wedding photographer it’s beyond an honor. It’s a trust they place in me to capture the memories of their day. Seven or eight years ago when my kids were much smaller than the giant teenagers they’ve now become, I hired Jennifer to be my part-time babysitter. To say that they loved her is an understatement. They looked forward to the days Jenn was sitting so much that the disappointment was visible when they were stuck with me for the day. Jenn became part of our family and I had always promised that when she got married I would shoot her wedding. This October I got to fulfill my promise as she and Justin had a warm and funny and slightly chilly outdoor ceremony on a hillside in Ijamsville. A very special part of their ceremony included their adorable one year old daughter Maddie who was a complete trooper as she was pulled down the aisle in a wagon and presented with a special necklace during the ceremony. The joy of their little family on their special day was infectious. Another special part of the day for me was having my whole family there. I’ve been shooting weddings for 13 years and they’ve never seen me at work. I entrusted my son Wyatt to be my assistant for the after ceremony portraits and it was quite amusing to watch him try to make Jenn’s veil fly. The biggest surprise for me was when my daughter Hannah asked to help as well and she was my trusty assistant for my sunset shot! Their reception highlights for me were Jenn’s dance with her dad–being an only child and very close to her parents the reaction from her mom was priceless. And the newly official Richards family took many turns around the dance floor happy as can be.

Park Hyatt wedding – Washington, DC

It’s very tempting to dispense with the recap of Caroline + Miguel’s wedding day and get right to the photos. It was such a great day from preparation through the reception that I almost don’t know where to begin. First, Caroline was the coolest bride ever. Literally unflappable. Yes, we were a few minutes late. No sweat. Yes, it was very windy and yes, our first look plans sort of fell by the wayside and their moment turned out to be in front of a bunch of tourist on bikes in front the Jefferson Memorial. No matter. It was a gorgeous sunny October day and everything happened just as it should. Even the Marine One flyover. Yes, we missed the first time but we caught the second and third one. And no hassles by Park Police at the monument—double bonus. Their ceremony at the Park Hyatt was sweet, a little tearful and pretty hilarious. Especially when Miguel worked up a sweat and his groomsmen swarmed around dry him off. And all this was just the tip of the iceberg. I really don’t know where to start with the reception but I can honestly say I’ve never been to one quite like it. Heartfelt speeches, particularly by Caroline’s dad and Miguel’s best man started the night which then turned into the best party ever courtesy of their band Go Go Gadget. They are a bar band—not a wedding band—and I’d been warned that they would tear the roof off the place. They didn’t disappoint. It’s rare that both my 2^nd shooter (who chooses to not be identified in my blog posts) and I want to put down the cameras and watch the band. Or dance. Their set of 60 songs in 60 minutes featuring all tunes from the 90s was masterful. The crowd was on their feet nonstop and the energy in the room was insane. Another highlight came when Caroline’s dad took the stage to play guitar and sing a great version of “I Saw Her Standing There.” OK, I guess I did find something to write about but really, when I look at these photos I just feel the incredible energy that was Caroline + Miguel’s wedding day. Finally, a special shout out to Caroline’s mom Nancy. These two strong southern women knew exactly what they wanted and made sure it all happened. Working closely with Michael Deltette at the Park Hyatt, it was one stellar day (and night)!

Army Navy Country Club wedding- Arlington, VA

Back to back Friday weddings on glorious fall days, how lucky could I get? Caitlin + Joey’s day was great from start to finish. There was the sweet moment where the bride’s niece helped her put on her shoes, Joey’s hug for his mom before the ceremony and the way that the two of them kept laughing and leaning in to each other during the service. And I can just go on and on about the portraits of the two of them. I knew from our engagement session in Old Town that the two of them would be stelar on the wedding day and I was not disappointed. We even had a little spur of the moment fun getting the full bridal party out onto the golf course with the Washington Monument in the background in between golfers playing through. I loved their first dance and the groom’s brother in law who is stationed in Afghanistan made an entrance with his family into the reception via iPad. A highlight of the evening was the couple’s friends singing “Wagon Wheel” with the whole crowd singing along. And for me, it was so great to catch up with my former couple Maura + Pat and to see so many familiar faces from the previous weddings I’ve photographed of Caitlin’s friends.
