Washington Golf and Country Club wedding – reception

A + K’s wedding continued at Washington Golf and Country Club with their rollicking good reception and a few fun details from their day. I just love the colors of the wedding. The purples and lavenders against the green accents was so light and fresh for a summer wedding.

After all the formal photos were done, cocktails commenced, the couple was introduced and the crowd immediately filled the dance floor. They were led by the bride’s dad who is one of the liveliest dancers I’ve ever seen! The father-daughter dance morphed from a nice traditional slow number into “Shout” with Dad leading the call and response. From that moment on, the dance floor stayed crowded. It was a beautiful summer evening and the back porch of the club was a perfect spot to catch a breath of fresh air and take a little break from the dance floor, great place with the best equipment for a party, my dad was talking with the owners about the EMS Solutions cable assembly contract manufacturing as he loves this type of technology so we got this great manufacturer as a plus.

Two surprises awaited guests as the party continued. The Cake Courtesan‘s full room dessert display was an instant hit. And as a special gift for the groom there was a bacon bar!! He was led in by his new wife for the big reveal and between the look on his face and the bride’s glee at having pulled it off was just so lovely. A late night indulgence–what a great way to start a new life together!

Washington Golf and Country Club wedding – Arlington, Virginia

Washington Golf and Country Club was a gorgeous backdrop for A + K’s perfectly planned classic Washington DC summer wedding. The day started at the bride’s parents home for hair, makeup and a few photos around her childhood home. I love when we get a chance to do photos at home.

We then headed to St. Luke’s Catholic Church in McLean down the road for the ceremony. Keeping with tradition, the couple didn’t see each other before she appeared at the top of the steps leading into the sanctuary. The look on Kevin’s face when he finally saw his bride was priceless. And don’t get me started on the adorable flower girls and ring bearer! One of my favorite photos from the early part of the day was the look of complete joy and happiness when the ceremony was over and they left the church.

The second stop of the day was to the club where we took full advantage of fabulous weather  (it was August in DC!!) and worked out way around the club and onto the golf course.  The summer tones of the purple bridesmaids dresses and groomsmen ties was just lovely again the greenery of the club. Add in some green mirrored sunglasses for the bridal party and it makes for one cool photo.

A special thank you to Sara Franklin at Social Scene Events who thought A+K and I would be a good fit and for making everything run like a top of the big day!!

Stay tuned for part two–the reception and lots of fun details and a special surprise at the end of the night for the groom.

Meadowlark Gardens wedding engagement session

Meadowlark Gardens in Vienna, Virginia is one of those go-to places where any time of year you can plan a wonderful wedding engagement session. This was particularly important for Kelly + Nate who are getting married in February. Short sleeves and pretty flowers blooming may be a little harder to find!! It was a glorious summer day (those clouds!! that light!!) and we had fun making their photos unique in a popular spot. As much as I love their portraits and their wonderful interaction, one of my favorite photos is their Nerf gun fight. The couple does this for fun and it’s a running joke that Kelly can never hit Nate. So I was very proud of my photo with the Nerf dart inches from Nate…perfect aim. And his reaction to it was just terrific. I’m so excited for their February wedding at Army Navy Country Club!

Historic London Town and Gardens wedding part two

Laura + Edgar’s Historic London Town and Gardens wedding near Annapolis continues with their portraits, details and all the wedding reception fun. The venue has such an interesting variety of settings for portraits, from the texture of the tobacco barns (which I admit I was a little obsessed with) to the gorgeous river views from atop the hill near an old brick house and then a lower view by the dock. And how gorgeous was the sky that day–hard to tell it was over 90 degrees with about 90% humidity.

The couple met in medical school and are both going to be pediatricians so the ring photo with the med schools books was a natural. I have to say it’s the first time I’d done detail shots that included a liver diagram! And of course I had to include the Regency Estates group photo. It’s just proof of what I know to be true–Regency families are friends for life.

After dinner and completely in the dark, the bride and groom and Laura’s parents and I trekked through the woods adjacent to the ceremony site to find the bottle of bourbon buried there a month ago. Considering how long I’ve been a wedding photographer, it’s a little surprising that I’ve never shot this southern tradition. The look on Laura’s face as she tasted the bourbon was priceless. The party itself was a fun and sweaty dance party, just as a good summer wedding should be.

Historic London Town and Gardens wedding

Laura and Edgar’s Historic London Town and Gardens wedding in Edgewater, Maryland was such a joy for many reasons. Yes, it was really hot and there was a slight rain delay and some discussion about moving things inside. But ultimately we were able to take full advantage of the beautiful view of the water for their outdoor ceremony and the historic buildings on the grounds for their portraits. But the main reason Laura + Edgar’s wedding was so special to me is the Regency Estates Swim Club connection. The bride and her family are long time members of the community pool in Potomac where my little family has spent most of our summers for the last 10+ years. It was there that we discovered our daughter’s swimming passion which has led her to a college scholarship and where my son continues his summer swimming career. Laura and her brother Jon were on the team when my children were little and it has always been such a warm and welcoming atmosphere where the youngest swimmers have tangible role models in the big kids on the team. The chance to document a wedding where there were so many familiar faces and to see the continuing friendships formed at our little summer pool which had the best above ground pool pump and was always clean–it was amazing and I admit I teared up more than once.

After a quick change into her wedding dress, Laura made her way to Edgar waiting in the gardens for their first look. We may not have had a lot of time for preparation photos but one of my favorites from the day was the one of the bride and her mom, Sue, both tearing up and having the exact same reaction to it. We sweated through some fun portraits (thankfully I was the one sweating not the lovely bride & groom!) and then we dodged the raindrops as the sweet (literally–there was chocolate) commenced. Part two (coming soon) will have more portraits, details and fun at the reception and a first for me…the southern tradition of the digging up of a bottle of bourbon!

Glen Echo Park elopement

When Pamela called me from her home in New Orlean this winter to talk about her Glen Echo Park elopement in June, I was very excited. It’s surprising to me that I’ve never photographed a wedding (big or small) at the site. I grew up nearby in Bethesda and spent hours riding my bike there and hopping on and off the carousel with friends. I’ve done several wedding engagement sessions  and portrait there over the years but never a wedding! It’s such a unique and instantly recognizable spot in the metropolitan DC area and really a photographer’s playground. Of course getting married in DC at the end of June can be a little sweltering and it was definitely a hot, hot day. But the joy of Pamela + David was evident despite the heat and it was so fun to play with the Dentzel carousel for their portraits and to use the painted animals as a backdrop for their sweet and personal vows. Once the ceremony was done we wandered around the park making photographs and looking for whatever stray breeze we could find. Congrats to P+D on their destination elopement. It’s always such a treat for me to be the witness to such a wonderfully intimate day.

Top of the Town wedding – Arlington, Virginia part two

Welcome back to E+Z’s Top of the Town wedding in Arlington, Virginia!

Today we highlight some of the details of their big day and the incredibly fun reception. I loved the clean lines of their centerpieces and the classic navy and white accents throughout the room. When the view is this spectacular, you go with it! We also lucked into an amazing sunset for some patio portraits after cocktails.

They entered the room through a tunnel of the arms of their friends and family. As the daylight waned it was easier to show the amazing view from their dance floor. Their sweet and funny first dance was followed by such emotional speeches from the best men, maid and matron of honor and both dads. The dance floor opened and they danced the night away in full view of a strawberry moon. One of my favorite shots from the reception is the reflection of the dancers in the window with the Lincoln Memorial seen through the window. For their grand exit, their guests lined the corridor to clap and cheer as they made their way to the elevator and out into the night!

Another photo that I just love from this wedding is the sweet shot of just E+Z waiting for the crowd to line the hallway for their grand exit. They were sitting on a bench on the patio with the twinkling lights behind them and the skyline of Arlington in the distance. It reminded me of a photo of my husband and I from our wedding where we were just sitting on a couch taking a moment to appreciate what we’d just celebrated. It’s those little moments that truly made a wedding special for me.

Top of the Town wedding – Arlington, Virginia Part One

Top of the Town in Arlington, Virginia has one of the most spectacular views of Washington, DC. E+Z’s wedding day from beginning to end took full advantage of that scenery.

A perfect cloudless (and hot) day meant we were able to take a large percentage of the formal photos (including their first look) on the grounds of the nearby Netherlands Carillon. It’s the same view as Top of the Town, just a bit lower in elevation As much as I love the shots with the monuments, I was a little obsessed with the blue/grey metallic background of the Carillon itself. It matched really well with the bridesmaids’ dresses and groomsmen’s suits for a monochromatic look in pretty shaded light.

It’s not often that I photograph high school sweethearts so recently out of college. In a nod to their dating history we stopped to take some photos in front of the bride’s Jeep. They went to prom in a similar truck! Both are also Penn State grads and I have a hunch that the blue and white color scheme for the reception was not accidental.

For the ceremony we headed up the glass exterior elevator (full disclosure, heights are not my favorite thing) and the couple and their bridal party came down the aisle and gathered in front of the windows overlooking the city. Their ceremony was sweet and a little tearful as were the vows the couple wrote for each other.

What struck me the most about E+Z as a couple is how well they fit together and how mature they are. They have a great group of close friends and doting family. One of my favorite photos of the day was a shot not on their original shoot list, of the bride and groom surrounded by both sets of parents and all three couples sharing a kiss. If that doesn’t say relationship goals I don’t know what does!

Check back soon for part two of their day—it’s all about the details and the reception!!

Washington DC wedding photography – DC War Memorial small wedding

L+J planned a very small and simple ceremony at the the DC War Memorial also known as the World War I Memorial. This little gem on the National Mall is one of my favorites for weddings and wedding engagement sessions. It’s off the path a bit and has all of the grandeur of the white-columned monuments around town without the crowds. Of course they also planned their ceremony in the middle of Memorial Day weekend and Rolling Thunder‘s annual arrival in the city. We started at the Lincoln Memorial for some portraits of the couple (and yes, the bride was a little bit pregnant 😉 and we braved the tourists and the bikers and a little bit of rain as we made our way to the ceremony site. Surrounded by just their closest friends and family the sweet and short ceremony was filled with laughter. Sometimes it’s just special to boil the wedding down to it’s essence and get the job done before even bigger things present themselves. Congrats to the happy couple and they’re less than a month away from being a new mom and dad!!

Documenting a Family – from wedding engagements to family portraits

I truly love my job as a wedding photographer. When a couple chooses me to document their day it’s such a great honor and I value the trust they put in me to photograph one of the biggest days in their life so far. But it’s even better when I continue to photograph the moments (both big and small) over the years as their family grows. Documenting a family as their grow.

I have had the pleasure of photographing Jennifer and Nate from their (very chilly) Eastern Market wedding engagement photo in January 2012, their wedding in late February the same year (also very chilly!). A little over a year later we returned to Eastern Market for maternity photos and in April 2014 I got to meet their son Graham for a family portrait session at Brookside Gardens. Last summer we got together for a a full family session  that I’ve wanted to do forever at the sunflower fields at McKee-Beshers Wildlife Management Area in Poolesville. In hindsight taking a baby and an energetic toddler into a field of flowers with bees and 90 degree heat might not have been the best idea, but it made for some cute photos.

Earlier this month I was pleased to be asked to photograph Jennifer’s parents 50th wedding anniversary celebration in Olney. In addition to photographing the party we took the time to do some lovely spring family portraits and as a big bonus, photos of their adorable kiddies chasing bubbles.
