Marija + Mike’s Middleburg, Virginia wedding

I wasn’t sure what to expect with Marija + Mike’s wedding. Both the church and the reception were places I hadn’t seen and the church had mega-restrictions on what I could shoot. In fact, they would have preferred I didn’t shoot at all. But I was thrilled when I pulled up to Trinity Episcopal Church and saw what a quaint and scenic spot the couple had chosen to get married. And it turns out that Marija’s parents had also been married there. I’m a sucker for that family tradition. The church was surrounded by rock walls and rolling hills and had lots of fun archways and doorways to shoot through. And it was a complete bonus that the couple was gorgeous and very comfortable in front of the camera, it just made my job easy. From the church we headed to Stoke Farm, a private residence. To say this was just someone’s home, doesn’t do it justice. It was an amazing layout with a boxwood garden, pergola and more of those rolling hills. It turns out the place is owned by Marija’s cousin and has been in the family since the Civil War. It was just unbelievable. Mike got the party started with a Sambuca toast and the dance floor was packed from beginning to end. I don’t often give a shout out to the band but their band, the Venture Rays from Richmond, VA were terrific. I was completely surprised by their cover of  “Bad Things,” aka the theme to True Blood. The last dance of the night was “American Girl” by Tom Petty which I thought was a pretty inspired choice. In my recent post about Maura + Pat’s wedding I mentioned that I had never seen a groom being carried horizontally around the dance floor—now I’ve witnessed it being done with the bride! It reminds me a little of the Hora just without the chairs. Or maybe it’s closer to planking. In any event, Marija was a good sport and it made for some fun photos.

Kristen + Victor’s Turf Valley wedding

For most of us in the wedding business 9-10-11 was a can’t miss date. Kristen and Victor realized the popularity of their date and came to me early via one of my trusted second shooters Ricky Carioti. Ricky had grown up with Kristen and her brothers in Hyattsville and so he sent them my way. It was especially fun for me (and I think for Kristen and her family) that Ricky was there helping me throughout the day. After a week of horrendous rains, the wedding date dawned bright and sunny (and a little warm). But we were happy to have it! Kristin and Victor win my award for the biggest bridal party I think I’ve ever shot—29 in all including bridesmaids, groomsmen, junior bridesmaids, flower girls and ring bearer. I loved the ring bearer—he was adorable in his little shorts and bow tie! It was interesting to watch Victor as Kristen waiting off to the side of the ceremony area for her bridesmaids to come down the aisle. He was trying as hard as possible not to see her until she was really on her way down the aisle. One of the highlights from the day for me was Victor and his mother’s mother-son dance. She was crying during their song and I have to admit, it got to me. This is the one point in the day that I tend to get emotional…it’s the dance I can envision with my son one day. But I was wiping away tears watching them. It’s obviously a close relationship and made for a good photo—I was crying but not hard enough to miss the shot!!

Carnegie Institution for Science – Kerry + Matt’s wedding – Hurricane Irene

I wasn’t supposed to shoot Kerry + Matt’s wedding. But Hurricane Irene changed my plans. My Rehoboth beach wedding was postponed due to the storm so I was happy to join Toni Sandys in documenting their day. And it was rainy and windy and generally what you’d expect from what turned out to be only a tropical storm. And it helped that they were getting married at Carnegie Institute in DC where you don’t need to be outside to make pretty pictures! Their wedding had a lot of help from friends and family who set up and decorated the venue and even were instrumental in “creating” Kerry’s bouquet (her 4 aunts each had a small bouquet that they present to the bride just before she began her walk down the aisle with her dad. Kerry planned the day herself and there was not shortage of fun details. Included were a Skyline chili station, a gelato cart, maroon and orange and blue and orange ribbons (Virginia Tech-Matt; Florida-Kerry) tied around some of the glasses, a signature drink called a Tropical Storm (that name may have been a last minute addition) and 40 oz Pabst Blue Ribbon beer bottles. But there were a couple things that particularly stood out during their reception. First up, the surprise tango.  No one knew that Kerry and Matt had been taking tango lessons. So they start their first dance, the music is bland and boring. They look at the DJ like there’s been a mistake and he puts on some punk music that makes Kerry hold her head and Matt dance around enthusiastically. Finally, the light dawns on her and Kerry finds her bridemaids who unfasten the bottom of her dress and Matt has his guys hold his glasses and wrap him in a Hokies flag. The meet in the middle and proceed to do a romantic tango to the cheers of their guests. It was great fun to watch. As the night progresses Kerry and Matt did venture out to the site’s portico and down the steps into the rain. If you look at the photos, you’ll see that the umbrellas are doing almost no good at all! But the one surprise I didn’t know about came at the end of the night. Most people in the face of a torrential downpour would have skipped the sparkler send off but instead they decided to just go out to the side portico and go across the building rather than into the rain. Or so I thought. They made it halfway across through the sparklers when they saw some of Kerry’s relatives wearing their bathing suits (caps and goggles included) standing in the rain with sparklers forming a path down the steps. So off the couple went, into the rain, hugging their family in their bathing suits and off into the rainy night. As I keep my personal list of wedding firsts, guests in swimwear may have just climbed to the top of the list!

Laura + Sam’s Carnegie Institution wedding

Having a wedding in July in Washington is a hit or miss proposition. One thing Laura and Sam knew for sure is that they didn’t want to go outside. Good thing they had such a gorgeous place for their wedding and reception! I love Carnegie Institution for Science. I hadn’t been there in a couple years and ironically I’ll be back again in October and I have two of my associates shooting there in late August. This is my year of multiple weddings at the same site. But I digress. Laura and Sam had an adorable book theme to their wedding and I loved their first look in the upstairs library. The fabulous details carried through with bookmarks as place cards, books stacked as centerpieces and even on the cake table. Some of my favorite photos of the day are of Laura and Sam before the wedding on the great staircase and those intimate moments where he kisses her hand and whispers in her ear. As with the best of those portraits, it was like I wasn’t even there. The party was a rocking affair with Laura’s grandmother from Ireland cutting a major rug on the dance floor. It was so fun to watch. I was thrilled to have Mark Gail with me as my second shooter for the first time. He definitely got some photos I wish I had. J

As a side note: no children were harmed in the taking of these photos. I love the shot of Sam’s nephew trying to look through the railing of the balcony. He didn’t get far—there wasn’t room to get his head stuck!

Olivia + Don’s Airlie wedding – July 2, 2011

It was such a pleasure to work with Olivia and Don throughout the whole wedding process. They showed their excellent taste by hiring me right away after our meeting and proceeded to be easy and comfortable during our engagement shoot at Reston Town Center. So I expected more of the same for their wedding day and I was not disappointed. Considering it was an outdoor wedding in July, the temperature and humidity held to an acceptable level and it was a gorgeous sunny day. They went with a patriotic color scheme for their July 2nd wedding and the red and blue flowers were a really lovely contrast to all the greenery around the grounds. Their ceremony was held in the garden surrounded by big blue hydrangeas. Airlie is such a pretty site, it really needs very little in the way of decoration. I was excited to be back there—it’s been a few years and it was great to get another shot at those cool steps and stone bridge on the property. One of my favorite shots of the day is Olivia and Don having a kiss in the garden surrounded by wildflowers. I just love his hand at her chin…such a sweet moment.

Katie + Tim’s Virginia wedding

It was nice for once to not worry about the weather on a wedding Saturday. June 11 was very sunny and hot but Katie and Tim’s wedding was all inside so we didn’t have to deal with that variable. Katie got ready for the wedding at her parent’s house. I was thrilled to take advantage of their center staircase and nice big windows to make photos that were looked like home and were pretty too. I particularly liked the shots there of everyone getting Katie into her dress (and the expression on her face!), her dress reflected in the mirror and Katie coming down the stairs as Dad walks underneath. Off to St. John Neumann Church in Reston for a lovely Catholic ceremony followed by the reception at Westfields. I was honored again to have Ricky Carioti working as my second photographer and we had fun shooting portraits of the happy couple around the hotel. The highlight of the reception for me was the toast that Katie’s sister made as the Matron of Honor. Tears were flowing and it was just so touching to see how close the two were and how happy her sister was for her!

Kristi + Dan’s DAR wedding – June 5, 2011

One of the first things Kristi and Dan told me when we met to discuss their upcoming June wedding was that they didn’t like having their pictures taken. I could totally relate because it’s not my favorite thing to do either. They insisted that they always make goofy faces and weren’t comfortable posing. What they didn’t tell me (and probably couldn’t have known) is that they make wonderful photos together when they’re just being themselves and that that by making each other laugh makes the best photos of all. Their wedding was my second visit to DAR National Headquarters in less than a month and I was happy to be back. It’s such a beautiful and traditionally Washington venue. Their Sunday morning wedding was elegant and fresh with a pop of yellow everywhere from the lemons and orchids in the table arrangements to Kristi’s yellow heels and Dan’s retro yellow cufflinks. And of course, his gray and yellow Argyle socks! We were restricted a bit from shooting during the ceremony but we managed to sneak a few shots in. One thing that Dan and Kristi had promised me was a rocking crowd at the reception. I was skeptical…day weddings tend to be less rowdy. It’s bright and a lot less alcohol is consumed. But they proved me completely wrong. It was a big dancing crowd and I have to say I’m not sure I’ve seen two mothers of the couple have a better time dancing at their children’s reception! Lemon meringue pie was cut instead of cake (a family recipe) and then the couple scooted off by yellow pedicab, keeping the color scheme going throughout the day. As always, it was a pleasure to work with Ricky Carioti as my second shooter.

Kelsey + Robert’s Meridian House wedding – May 28, 2011

Kelsey and Robert were way ahead of the curve. They hired me to shoot their May 28, 2011 wedding in November of 2009. I shot their engagement shoot not long after and then all we had to do is wait another year and a half for the big day! I was excited to be back at the Meridian House, one of the prettiest venues in town and it was a beautiful (if a tad hot) day so we got to take full advantage of the site. Kelsey looked like a princess in her Kleinfeld dress and as she got ready it became a scene out of “Gone With The Wind.” Her sister Amber tugged on the corset laces of the dress from the back while Robert’s sister held her from the front. I particularly loved seeing the interaction between Kelsey and her family. Toni Sandys, my fabulous second shooter, captured a couple moments between Kelsey and her dad and Kelsey and her sister before the ceremony and there were a few whispered words from Dad as well as he lifted the veil during the ceremony. There was also a big surprise awaiting the newlyweds at the end of the night. Donna, Kelsey’s mom had rented a vintage Bentley to drive the couple around DC at night and we followed them down to the Capitol to get some night shots. I was really pleased with how those photos came out—my favorites, I think, are the shots of the two of them leaning against the Bentley and the view from the rear window. Something about that last shot just seems romantic to me!

Liz + Matt’s wedding – DAR – May 21, 2011

I don’t even know where to start with Liz and Matt. Really it started (as many of my weddings do) with Lindsay and Chris’ wedding in August of 2009. Liz and Lindsay are Virginia Tech sorority sisters. And Liz is one of  a handful of my brides who knew she wanted me to be her photographer as she started her vendor process. Which is very flattering, and just a little bit of pressure.  Luckily I love Liz and her handsome husband Matt and throughout the past year she’s been an awesome sounding board for me and my business. There are just times where it’s invaluable to have someone who’s going through the bridal process to bounce ideas off. Her DAR venue and plan for a vintage and romantic Washington wedding came off beautifully. The weather was amazing for the early evening ceremony on the portico of the building and the elegant set up of the dining room and the small details like pink and white striped straws and a vintage mailbox with postcards for the guests to fill out for the newlyweds, really made the day special. A couple of the details I particularly loved were her dramatic necklace and her birdcage veil. The portraits of her just after putting it on are some of my favorites from the day. And I’d like to digress for a moment in the middle of this post to say that even though I love all my brides, I have had a run of especially awesome grooms. Matt falls into that category. We bonded over swimming (he swam at Yale and had a bridal party full of his swim buddies and my daughter is just starting her swimming career) and he was so sweet to take time out of his reception to ask how she was doing and what and where she was swimming next. How thoughtful is that! The party was a rocking affair with even Liz’s grandmother taking a turn on the dance floor. I stayed later than usual and the dancing go more rowdy and made for some very fun photos as well. It was a pleasure to work again with Alex Pare of Cherry Blossom Weddings & Events who helped Liz make the day gorgeous. Below are the others who made it amazing:

Katy + Paul’s Strong Mansion wedding – May 14, 2011

Katy and Paul’s wedding was my second time at Strong Mansion in the month of May. And unfortunately, just like the first one, the forecast was not promising. Spitting rain, drizzle and an ominous forecast for later in the day had me more upset than usual. There’s always a rain plan but Strong Mansion is such a gorgeous place, it seemed criminal to have to shoot the ceremony inside a tent! As I waited with Paul by the stone steps for Katy to sneak up behind him for their first look, I heard her voice from the house telling the caterer that unless it was raining, raining…the ceremony would be outside. A woman after my own heart! The other thing that struck me as I waited with Paul is that at the sound of Katy’s voice, he burst into the broadest smile. And that smile didn’t let up the whole day—except for maybe a few emotional moments during the ceremony. After the ceremony the bridal party headed down to the lower garden on the grounds and we took a ton of fun shots. I’m not usually a big fan on formal group shots but this group was game for anything. I don’t do many jumping shots at weddings but they ended up being among my favorites of the day. Special thanks to my wonderful second photographer Ricky Carioti who carted my light up and down the big hill and held back tree branches so I could get my shots. And there was a four-legged member of the bridal party as well. Katy’s dog Chloe. She was walked down the aisle, greeted the newlyweds right after their vows (one of my favorite shots from the day) and even looked weary at the end of a long night of partying. Oh, and it started to pour about 8 p.m.—just in time for dinner and dancing under the tent. So no one even seemed to notice.
