Army and Navy Club wedding – Washington DC (part two)

A+C’s lovely Army and Navy Club wedding day continued with their ceremony in the beautiful blue room upstairs. During the bride’s long walk down the aisle with the dad, she was just beaming! The mirror and the large chandelier were a lovely backdrop for the wedding ceremony. From there, guests and the couple made their way down the hall to cocktails where the delicious passed appetizerss reflected the couple’s journey from California to the East Coast.

The downstairs ballroom at the club was beautifully transformed with the do-it-yourself floral centerpieces in soft tones and wire table numbers—a lovely offsetting of the dark paneled walls and murals of the room. A+C wowed their guests with their choreographed first dance which was followed by toasts and dinner. The reception was low key, more of a cocktail party with mingling and laughs rather than dancing.

At the end of my time at the wedding we snuck out for a night time shot (one of my favorite things to do!) at one of the spots I’d scouted before the rain interfered. It turned out to be both moody and romantic–a great combination!

Downtown Washington DC wedding

If a little rain is good luck on your wedding day (and it is–it rained on mine!) then Alyssa + Caleb should be good for a long time. Overall it was a rainy day at the Army and Navy Club in downtown Washington DC over Labor Day weekend for their wedding. Thank goodness the club is lovely with it’s curved staircase and dramatic chandeliers. We just worked inside until a last minute clearing allowed us out for some fun photos.

I love photographing a couple in downtown DC on a weekend. Midtown is pretty deserted and there’s a lot of fun nooks and crannies to explore for fun backgrounds. Unfortunately we couldn’t use some of the locations I’d scouted but stay tuned for fun end of the night photo taken just around the corner from the club!

Alyssa’s style was just so elegant. Simple and classic, her dress was tailored perfectly and I loved how unfussy she chose to be on her wedding day. Caleb was so elegant in his classic tuxedo. The photos of the two of them on the main stairs in the club were just so clean and simple and yet stunning. The blush of the flowers and the bridesmaids dresses were a perfect compliment to the clean lines of the day.

Alyssa was all smiles getting ready to see Caleb at their first look. The laughter and a few tears were there from early in the day and continued through their ceremony (see that in the next installment) and low key reception.

Washington DC wedding photography – DC War Memorial small wedding

L+J planned a very small and simple ceremony at the the DC War Memorial also known as the World War I Memorial. This little gem on the National Mall is one of my favorites for weddings and wedding engagement sessions. It’s off the path a bit and has all of the grandeur of the white-columned monuments around town without the crowds. Of course they also planned their ceremony in the middle of Memorial Day weekend and Rolling Thunder‘s annual arrival in the city. We started at the Lincoln Memorial for some portraits of the couple (and yes, the bride was a little bit pregnant 😉 and we braved the tourists and the bikers and a little bit of rain as we made our way to the ceremony site. Surrounded by just their closest friends and family the sweet and short ceremony was filled with laughter. Sometimes it’s just special to boil the wedding down to it’s essence and get the job done before even bigger things present themselves. Congrats to the happy couple and they’re less than a month away from being a new mom and dad!!

Watergate Hotel reception in DC – Bob + Dan’s wedding part two

After Bob + Dan’s Washington National Cathedral wedding ceremony (detailed in part one) we took advantage of some of the very interesting light and windows inside the Cathedral before heading down Rock Creek Parkway to the new and fabulous Watergate Hotel for their wedding reception.

A quick trip to their top floor suite and a sweet gift exchange was followed by a windy photo session on the balcony of their room. How amazing is the view of the Potomac River, Georgetown and Virginia? The original plan was to do these photos at the Top of the Gate, but wind prevented that. Honestly, I was so happy with the portraits on the balcony that I’m not sure we would have done better at the very top!

The vibe at the hotel fit the couple so well. It is a sleek and elegant space with a retro feel that is really fresh. I admit to being a little obsessed with the reflective textured columns in the lobby of the hotel which I thought made a lovely B&W late night portrait of the couple.

The party was on as soon as the grooms hit the dance floor. Considering that the couple met two-stepping at a country and western bar, let’s just say they have some moves. Especially Bob! I loved the decor of the room with it’s nod to the history of the hotel including tables or Bob Woodward and Richard Nixon. And I would be very remiss if I didn’t give a shout out to Michael Deltette, Director of Catering and Events at the Watergate. He referred me to the grooms and he kept everything at the reception running so smoothly (as he always does!!).

Washington National Cathedral wedding

I am so excited to finally share part one of Bob + Dan’s gorgeous fall Washington National Cathedral wedding and Watergate Hotel reception in October. Their wedding was my first time at both locations and it’s always such a fun creative challenge to photograph a wedding in a new (to me!) space. We started the day at their home in Columbia Heights surrounded by their entire wedding party and immediate family. It was such a fun group and I just love the photographs of the two of them getting ready together. We drove over to the Cathedral early to spend some time in lovely Bishop’s Garden for groom portraits and wedding party photos. Let’s just say it was a teensy bit blustery. Not gale force but definitely windy!

The building itself is simply stunning. And ornate and incredibly beautiful. The ceremony took place in the far back of the Cathedral on the High Altar. Which makes for a very very long walk down the aisle. The ceremony was personal and joyful and a true celebration of Bob + Dan’s relationship. A receiving line followed the ceremony and then since I couldn’t resist, a few more interior wedding day portraits of the two of them before we proceeded to the Watergate for their party. Those photographs and the wedding reception and details will be coming soon!

Favorite wedding photographs of 2016 Part Two

My favorite wedding photographs of 2016 continues with the second half of the year. The fall wedding season brought to two destination weddings, one on Mackinac Island, Michigan and the other in Provincetown, Massachusetts. I had fun exploring both locations and it’s always a great creative challenge to photograph a wedding in a new location so different from the metropolitan DC area.

Here are the full blog posts from each of the weddings below but enjoy the five images I’ve chosen from each one.

Favorite wedding photographs of 2016 Part One

In my many years as a wedding photographer, one thing I have not done is a year end round up of my favorite wedding photographs. It’s a new year so I thought I’d start it off right but trying something new!

I decided to make the task even harder by limiting each wedding (that was allowed to appear online) to five images. These are often my favorites or ones that I may have overlooked in previous blog posts. As hard as it is to narrow down each wonderful day into so few images, it was great fun to look back over the past year and the great couples I had the pleasure to work with.

Here are the full blog posts from each of the weddings below but enjoy the five images I’ve chosen from each! And stay tuned later in the week for part two from the second half of 2016.

Fall Carnegie Institution of Science wedding DC – Part Two

Abbie + Jon’s fall Carnegie Institution of Science DC wedding was a little rainy and overcast. The weather really allowed us to take full advantage of the building for portraits, both inside and out. Those giant dark studded doors on the portico are such a great  backdrop. As is the light grey exterior of the building and those columns!!

The combination of the soft diffuse light and how much fun Abbie + Jon are together made for some sweet wedding day portraits.

After a few quiet moments together after the ceremony, the real party got started. After cocktails came emotional toasts from both sets of proud parents and the best men and maid of honor. Their first dance in the rotunda was surrounded by all their friends and family. That iconic floor took center stage and made for great overhead photos. I love to photograph dancing (especially the Hora) from that vantage point!

I loved the color palette of royal blue and gold with low white flower arrangements in the dining room. And the Treat Yo’ Self cookie table for dessert was a huge hit.

At the end of the night we went outside for a few night photos. One of my absolute favorites from the day came from that 10 minute break in the festivities. The real entrance to the Carnegie Institution for Science is on P St. and that brightly lit overhang makes for such a romantic night photograph. The 16th street steps are good too, but for me there’s something so classic about that front door photo.

There are so many reasons why I love a Carnegie Institution of Science DC wedding. I think the photos from Abbie + Jon’s day show exactly why it is one of my favorites and so classically Washington. Check out more of my real weddings and there’s lots more Carnegie images all over my website!

Fall Carnegie Institution for Science wedding

As temperatures drop and 2016 comes to a close, I wanted to look back at Abbie + Jon’s beautiful fall Carnegie Institution for Science wedding in early October. Carnegie is one of my all time favorite places to photograph a wedding in DC in any season.

No matter the weather, you can make wonderful photos inside and outside the building. I’ve even photographed a wedding there in a hurricane! There’s the instantly recognizable rotunda, the marble columns and high ornate moldings throughout the building and that winding staircase!

The wedding day began with a little rain so we stayed under the portico for photos. Once the rain stopped, we moved to the steps and made one of my favorite photos–the boys socks reflected in a puddle.

Abbie took advantage of the grand staircase as she made her entrance down the aisle with her parents. Jon was waiting for her under their chuppah which itself was a work of art. It mimicked the floor of the rotunda and was made with material from family wedding dresses. They read their own vows and Jon successfully smashed the glass at the end of the ceremony which is always a good sign!

Today’s post looks at the preparation at nearby hotels, their first look in the upstairs library at Carnegie, the signing of the ketubah and the wedding ceremony. Check back later in the week and you’ll see the bride and groom portraits and the reception photos. And if you’re curious, there’s lots of other Carnegie weddings on the blog. Like Sarah + Danny and Dan + Mariana!
