Favorite wedding photographs of 2016 Part One

In my many years as a wedding photographer, one thing I have not done is a year end round up of my favorite wedding photographs. It’s a new year so I thought I’d start it off right but trying something new!

I decided to make the task even harder by limiting each wedding (that was allowed to appear online) to five images. These are often my favorites or ones that I may have overlooked in previous blog posts. As hard as it is to narrow down each wonderful day into so few images, it was great fun to look back over the past year and the great couples I had the pleasure to work with.

Here are the full blog posts from each of the weddings below but enjoy the five images I’ve chosen from each! And stay tuned later in the week for part two from the second half of 2016.

Park Hyatt wedding – Washington, DC

What a pleasure it was to start 2016 off with Lindsay + Meredith and their Park Hyatt wedding in downtown DC. Early January can be a risky weather proposition in Washington but we lucked out with an unseasonably warm day–warm enough for a charming first look in front of the iconic Blue Duck Tavern big black doors. I just loved the photo of their friends and Lindsay’s mom watching them see each other for the first time from the window! In fact the whole day was filled with the support of their family and friends. Their ceremony was funny and emotional and conducted by one of their closest friends. What strikes me so much as I look through their photos is the sheer joy on both of their faces throughout the day. They make each other laugh and their happiness is just contagious. The Park Hyatt was the perfect setting for their day, chic and modern and Blue Vanda Design‘s orchids throughout the ceremony and reception space was just the right touch. The couple was determined to throw and great party and there’s no doubt they succeeded. From their first dance the party was in full swing and we had such fun capturing the energy. Although I have to say that one of my absolute favorites from the evening was Lindsay and her father’s dance. Tears were flowing (which is always good for photos!).

Park Hyatt wedding – Washington DC

J+E’s Park Hyatt wedding was my second time at the hotel this summer. Good thing I love to shoot there! J+E started their day together alone in their suite getting ready. It made for some nice calm moments and they put on their matching poodle bowties. They did have one other companion in the suite–their adorable poodle Louie who looked so dapper in his bowtie collar. Thankfully it wasn’t too hot to take Louie for a walk and to pose for some photos outside the hotel and in front of the Park Hyatt’s big black doors. Their traditional Jewish wedding started with the Ketubah signing and then proceeded down the aisle and were married under a beautiful chuppah designed by E’s mother. I just loved the flowers by Blue Vanda that transformed their reception with deep jewel tones. And their cake topper is one of my favorites in recent memory…J+E and Louie perched on top! A great party finished up the evening with the Hora, emotional toasts from family and their best women and even a Soul Train line on the dance floor. And as a special treat for me, I was ably assisted by my daughter Hannah. Nothing better than working with my girl!

Park Hyatt wedding – Washington, DC

I always look forward to a Park Hyatt wedding. There are definitely advantages to shooting someplace often, but each couple adds there own dynamic to the day. It’s a fun challenge for me to find new places to make fabulous photos. Carrie and Adam got married on a steamy day in July (yes, still running behind on blogging) and that meant a limit on what we could do outside. We did get off a few quick shots outside the iconic black doors of the Blue Duck Tavern but mostly we were inside. I was blown away by the gorgeous room décor. The flowers over the chuppah were just stunning and the white and blush pink color scheme for the day was lovely as well. One of my favorite moments from the day was when Carrie came out to a room full of family and friends after getting dressed. Her mom peeking her head out from behind the door was priceless. Another favorite was a very small moment while Carrie was getting bustled when Adam leaned over to give her a kiss. It’s just her eyes looking up at him but it is those moments that excite me the most about being a wedding photographer.

Park Hyatt wedding – Washington, DC

To say that food was a priority at the wedding of Katy and David is an understatement. They are the owners of Eat Place in Petworth – the site of their adorable engagement session earlier this year. The Park Hyatt was the perfect host for their big day. And for me, it was a lovely marriage of food photography and wedding work. I knew Katy would be a stylish bride and not just because of her planned wardrobe change into a gorgeous red dress during the reception. I know I’m there to document the moments but I could have spent an hour just photographing her shoes! Both pairs were so cool. I also loved the décor for their reception. The ballroom was glowing in pink and orange and the centerpiece with real oranges and spices and on every table a jar of Katy’s hot sauce. Another fun touch was that during the reception no one was allowed to clink glasses to get the bride & groom to kiss..they had to get up and perform which led to some very amusing group poems and tributes.

Petworth DC wedding engagement

My first wedding engagement session of 2015 was with Katy + David in their restaurant/kitchen space  Eats Place, in Petworth, DC. In addition to showcasing Katy’s dumplings, they hosts guests chefs and and pop up eateries. It was great fun to explore their space inside and out, including the downstairs kitchen and a quick upstairs visit with their adorable pup. Their wedding is this Saturday at the Park Hyatt, a mecca for foodie weddings.

The Park Hyatt is one of my favorites locations for elegant and modern weddings in DC.

Stephanie + Michael’s wedding – April 3, 2011

I’ve photographed many Jewish weddings–Reform, Conservative, Reconstructionist–but Stephanie and Michael’s Orthodox wedding was a number of firsts for me. The day was full of interesting and symbolic events. Among the more visual parts of the day were the Tish (where the woman and men gather separately to greet and praise the bride and groom) , the mothers breaking a dish at the signing of the Ketubah and an energetic 40-minute Hora. All of this took place amidst much hugging, some crying and lots of laughter. It was really special to see how seamlessly these families were coming together to celebrate the union. The tear started early when Stephanie’s dad saw her for the first time in her dress. Stephanie’s eyes welled when she and Michael had their first look. And the toasts at the reception had everyone tearing up! All that makes for great photos. We were able to take advantage of a beautiful spring day and the fabulous Magnolias in full bloom outside the Park Hyatt. Inside the flowers and the purple accents at the ceremony and reception were elegant and unusual…I loved the goldfish bowls with tulips that served as decoration for the Tish and cocktails.

I am most grateful to Lesley Cohen who sent Stephanie and Michael my way.  As a close friend of the couple, I’m sure she had a blast being a guest for once instead of working the wedding. And a special thanks to Michael Connor who shot with me. It’s always a pleasure when we get to work together.
