Favorite wedding photographs of 2016 Part One

In my many years as a wedding photographer, one thing I have not done is a year end round up of my favorite wedding photographs. It’s a new year so I thought I’d start it off right but trying something new!

I decided to make the task even harder by limiting each wedding (that was allowed to appear online) to five images. These are often my favorites or ones that I may have overlooked in previous blog posts. As hard as it is to narrow down each wonderful day into so few images, it was great fun to look back over the past year and the great couples I had the pleasure to work with.

I’m very excited to share today’s Washingtonian Bride & Groom blog post on Chris + Scott’s beautiful Meridian House wedding that I photographed this spring in DC. It was truly a wedding with everything, spectacular venue, perfect weather and a wonderful couple. The highlight of the day for me, both as a witness and a wedding photographer, was their ceremony. It was so emotional and personal. Just looking at Scott’s tears while Chris reads his vows, gets me every time. Special thanks to Kawania Wooten at HW Events who recommended me to the happy couple and who ran the whole day flawlessly!!

Meridian House wedding – Washington, DC

Things I love: a gorgeous sunny day, a dapper pair of grooms, a return to Meridian House, and emotional wedding ceremony and a well run event. Boy, did I hit the jackpot with Chris + Scott’s wedding! I knew when I first met the couple in the Nordstrom Cafe at Montgomery Mall many months ago that were were going to get along beautifully. And I was thrilled to be working with Kay at Howerton + Wooten Events again. She makes it all run so smoothly which makes my life easy. On any wedding day, I never know exactly where my favorite photos will come from. I always work hard to get the portraits beautiful and the reception always has a life of it’s own. But the ceremony is often a wild card. Some are emotional, some are traditional and classic. But when couples recite their own vows it’s such a window into their relationship and I just love that. Listen to Chris reading from his teenage diary and watching Scott’s tears flow, I was getting teary. The ceremony in the round in the garden was just the right touch. There’s something so special about being literally surrounded by those you love. Their reception in chic blue and yellow with farm tables for the head table and Metro sign centerpieces was really lovely. And the hanging Edison lights in the garden? I may have been a little obsessed with them (full disclaimer: I just installed a light fixture with them in my house so they are a favorite!). It was a gorgeous night ending with a sparklers surrounded two very happy grooms.

Kelsey + Robert’s Meridian House wedding – May 28, 2011

Kelsey and Robert were way ahead of the curve. They hired me to shoot their May 28, 2011 wedding in November of 2009. I shot their engagement shoot not long after and then all we had to do is wait another year and a half for the big day! I was excited to be back at the Meridian House, one of the prettiest venues in town and it was a beautiful (if a tad hot) day so we got to take full advantage of the site. Kelsey looked like a princess in her Kleinfeld dress and as she got ready it became a scene out of “Gone With The Wind.” Her sister Amber tugged on the corset laces of the dress from the back while Robert’s sister held her from the front. I particularly loved seeing the interaction between Kelsey and her family. Toni Sandys, my fabulous second shooter, captured a couple moments between Kelsey and her dad and Kelsey and her sister before the ceremony and there were a few whispered words from Dad as well as he lifted the veil during the ceremony. There was also a big surprise awaiting the newlyweds at the end of the night. Donna, Kelsey’s mom had rented a vintage Bentley to drive the couple around DC at night and we followed them down to the Capitol to get some night shots. I was really pleased with how those photos came out—my favorites, I think, are the shots of the two of them leaning against the Bentley and the view from the rear window. Something about that last shot just seems romantic to me!
