Carnegie Institution for Science fall wedding

What a stunner of a day it was for J+C’s fall wedding at Carnegie Institution for Science in Washington, DC. A gorgeous blue sky and two stunning brides–it doesn’t get much better than that.

Their wedding day began bright and beautiful as both women got dressed with help from their mothers and then made their way to Meridian Hill Park for an animated first look. I don’t usually do a back to back reveal, but their expressions once they turned around and saw each other were just priceless. We made out way through the park taking full advantage of the blue blue sky and the sunlight before heading to Carnegie Institution for Science for their traditional Jewish wedding. After a ketubah signing in the upstairs library, both brides descended the grand staircase and met under the chuppah and circled each other. Their vows were funny and sweet and J did a fine job breaking the glass at the end of the ceremony. Stay tuned for part two with more portraits of the couple and their family and their rocking reception!!

Wedding Engagements – part one

Did you know that the period between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day is what we in the wedding industry call engagement season? As we near the peak engagement frenzy, I thought it was a good time to show some of the engagement sessions I’ve had throughout the year. Many are in recognizable locations like the Lincoln and Jefferson Memorials, Old Town Alexandria and Union Market and Meridian Hill Park and outside Nats Park. And also my first photo shoot inside a DC Public Library in Georgetown. It was also really fun to have the run of the place at Merriweather Post Pavillion in Columbia for Dennis + Megan’s session. Stay tuned for more to come later this week of some fall wedding engagements around town!

Meridian Hill Park, DC wedding engagement

There’s a reason why I wait until sunny days to do my wedding engagement sessions and this beauty at Meridian Hill Park (one of my favorite spots for an wedding engagement session) was no exception. I don’t have any control over the weather on the wedding day but I do when we schedule a wedding engagement session!

I had so much fun with H+E at the park and exploring their neighborhood. I can’t wait for their Carnegie Institution for Science wedding in September.

St. Matthew’s Cathedral – Carnegie Institution for Science wedding – Washington, DC

Sarah + Danny didn’t have a backup plan. They were counting on a sunny Friday in September to get married. And Mother Nature cooperated in a splendid fashion. I have to admit that a lot of my favorite moments came from the time we spent at Meridian Hill Park before the ceremony for the first look, bride and groom portraits and group shots. They had one of the best first looks in recent memory—from the primping of the bride by her bridesmaids and her mom just before she saw Danny, through their tears and laughter once they got their first glimpse. We pretty much had the park to ourselves and took full advantage of the staircase for group shots, including a great photo bomb by the bridesmaids of the groomsmen. The sun, the park and the adorable couple—it made me one happy photographer. We went from the park to St. Matthews for their evening service and then to a great party at the Carnegie Institution. Sarah + Danny’s love for each other and their enthusiasm about their momentous day was apparent at every turn—it was such a joy just to witness and document it for them.

Maggie + Roy’s elopement – Washington, DC

I knew I wanted to photograph Maggie + Roy’s wedding/elopement as soon as we started to talk on the phone. She told me it would just be the two of them, a photographer and an officiant.  I love little weddings. Maybe because I had one myself but it’s hard to beat the intimacy of two people standing up just for themselves, holding hands and  proclaiming their love. And in Maggie’s case, crying a little. I had so much fun walking around with them after the ceremony, just making pretty pictures. And it was a big bonus that their apartment building had such a cool lobby. It was a like a bridal portrait session with the best models ever…two people in love.

Kate + Matt’s Carnegie Institution of Science wedding – Washington, DC

It’s tempting to say that the third time was the charm for me at Carnegie Institution of Science but really each of the three weddings I’ve shot there this year has been wonderful and different. Kate and Matt were the second part of my Columbus Day weekend doubleheader, and like Carla and Ed’s wedding the day before, the weather was amazing. That is one significant difference from the other weddings I’d had at Carnegie. We actually go to go outside! One of the most memorable parts of the day for me was when we left the building after the ceremony to head to Meridian Hill Park for photos. There was supposed to be a car waiting to take the three of us up the street. Kate and Matt waved goodbye to their guests and rounded the corner on P St. and found no car so Matt hailed a cab and we were on our way. I was impressed by the fact that they went completely with the flow, didn’t sweat a small snag and that Matt had money with him on his wedding day! As we approached the park we heard noise but I assumed it was the drum circle that happens on weekends at the park. Turns out it was the start of the Occupy DC march that was heading down 16th St. towards the White House. We couldn’t get right in front of them but close enough to see the police car escort and parade in the background! Another of my favorite photos that was a special request from the couple is the ring photo. Kate’s work for the Dept. of Defense takes her often to Afghanistan and so, of course, that’s where we put the rings on the cool globe that sits in the Carnegie library.
