Sarah + Nate – Congressional Country Club wedding

Early spring weddings in this area can be a little hit and miss. And this year it felt like spring would never come. But Sarah + Nate’s early spring wedding day was a definite hit. Temperatures in the 60s and the gorgeous backdrop of Congressional Country Club made for a fabulous day. Their patio ceremony began with a violin processional by one of their bridal party and their ceremony was performed by the judge they had both clerked for. They were married under a clear blue sky. A sunset cocktail hour followed by a jam packed dance floor. It was a pleasure to work with so many of my favorite wedding pros (see the list below) and finally, a special shout out goes to Jackie and Claire who became my go to gals throughout the day.

Brenna + Joe’s wedding – St. Aloysius Gonzaga Church + Congressional Country Club

Brenna and Joe were not my last wedding of 2013 but they will be my last blog post as I prepare to shoot my last wedding of the year tomorrow. 2013 has been a wonderful year of weddings and Brenna + Joe’s day was a truly a highlight. Their wedding felt like a real homecoming for me. With three of my former brides (Maura. Natalie and Dara)  in attendance it was so amazing to know so many people and to catch up with everyone. A gorgeous (but chilly) October day during peak fall foliage at Congressional Country Club made it an unforgettable day. Some of my favorites photos: portraits in a windy leaf storm, found light in the basement of the church for a portrait of Brenna against a stained glass window, and tears during the Matron of Honor speech by Bethany. There were so many great moments and it was such a beautiful day. And to all, Happy Holidays and see you in 2014!

Rachel + Josh – Comus Inn, Dickerson, Maryland

What a glorious fall day for Rachel + Josh’s wedding! With the backdrop of Sugarloaf Mountain and the late afternoon sun bathing everything in a gold glow, it really doesn’t get much better. They were married under a chuppah of birch trees and surrounded by their friends and family. The most memorable part of the day for me was how sweet everyone at the wedding was—both the father of the bride and father of the groom came up to tell us how much they appreciate all our hard work on the wedding day. And the toasts during the reception were pretty extraordinary. Rachel + Josh have been dating since high school (!) and have devoted their lives to helping people. It was pretty amazing to hear how admired and respected they are. They were so adorable together as the photos prove. And as an extra bonus, I got to catch up with Andra + Daniel who recommended me to Rachel + Josh after I shot their wedding in June of 2012!

Catching up…

Just a little pre-Labor Day love from two of my fabulous couples. After a very relaxing August I’m happy to post photos from two engagement shoots done over the summer. I had fun hanging with Brenna + Joe in my neck of the woods in Potomac and on the C&O Canal while Christine + Lance and I explored the Capitol grounds on a lovely summer’s evening. Can’t wait for both weddings in October + December. Happy Labor Day and look for Chu + David’s engagement session on the blog next week 🙂

Mary + Logan’s wedding – Marine Barracks, DC + Harry Browne’s, Annapolis, MD

The summer of small weddings continued with Mary and Logan’s morning ceremony and lunch. The group of immediate family and very close friends gathered in the Commandant’s garden at  the historic home on the Marine Corps 8th & I Barracks. It’s the oldest post in the Corps. There aren’t a lot of weddings held at the Barracks but Logan now works on base after serving protecting the President at the White House. In his full dress uniform he looked so handsome waiting for Mary to come down the aisle with her father. The two of them were so cute during rhe ceremony–their joy so clearly on their faces made for some of the best images of the day. After some portraits around the parade grounds we headed to Annapolis for their lunch reception at Harry Browne’s restaurant. But not before a stop across the street at the State Capitol for some couple photos and a change out of his uniform for Logan. The restaurant’s upstairs room was made into a cozy (and cool) reception space, just perfect for a small crowd, some sweet toasts and a little cake on the forehead for the groom.

Talisha + Monica engagement photos

What an adorable couple! We had such a good time finding wonderful light in Rockville of all places. We started at their favorite local restaurant Cava, and worked out way through their neighborhood ending up at the big and very cool mirrored building at the Human Genome Sciences headquarters. It goes without saying that I am beyond excited for their Memorial Day weekend wedding!

Heidi + Brian’s wedding – October 6, 2012 – Gaithersburg, Maryland

I’m sure I first saw Heidi several years ago at her best friend’s Jackie’s wedding. Jackie and Sean’s wedding was one of the first I photographed after starting my own business. It definitely felt like a family affair when Julia, another former bride–and Jackie’s sister –did Heidi’s wedding day makeup (impeccably I might add). Jackie and Sean’s adorable daughter Kaelyn was the flower girl. Heidi and Brian are such a fun couple and their wedding day was filled with laughs. Starting with the bride’s walk down the aisle. Kaelyn made it down the aisle but didn’t throw any rose petals. Luckily Heidi’s dad had snagged a few and threw them as they walked.  Heidi and Brian were very expressive and laughed a lot during the ceremony until the tears began to flow as the couple made their presentation to the Virgin Mary. I’d like to give a shout out to Heidi who was totally agreeable to getting into a swan paddle boat in her wedding dress.  The Washingtonian Center in Gaithersburg adjacent to their reception site has a little lake and I thought it would be a very cool picture. It turned out to be of my favorites of the day and she didn’t hesitate for a bit. Heidi is a kickboxer and she and Brian incorporated that into their reception entrance. Brian came out first and was handed a pad while Heidi ran in, purple boxing gloves on for a friendly one-two punch. The dance floor was rocking all night and it was the first time—and not the last for this wedding season—I’d seen everyone doing the dance to “Gangam Style.” And I’m not usually a huge fan of the bouquet and garter toss but the sequence of Brian taking the garter off was great and the garter part of the ritual is usually uncomfortable and quick. This time, the couple was an actual couple and boy, did he get into it! Again, it made for funny photos. One thing that made me laugh out loud as I was editing the wedding photos was something I didn’t notice while I was shooting. Heidi’s Grammy—who spent a good part of the night on the dance floor—is in the single girl line up to catch the bouquet!!

Julia + Vasily – September 23, 2012 – Glenview Mansion, Rockville, Maryland

Julia and Vasily are continuing a trend for me this year. Couples who get married before their ceremony! The two were married in March but planned a lovely ceremony and party with close friends and family in September. They chose the fabulous Glenview Mansion and luckily the first fall day where the air started to feel crisp and sort of like fall. Highlights of the day included the toasts by the father of the bride and father of the groom outside the Mansion, just before guests went inside for dinner. This is where I found out that in the Russian tradition after a toast the champagne is declared “bitter” and the bride and groom must kiss to add sweetness. This happened a lot during the night. The dance floor was crowded for a swing dance lesson from Dabe and Janelle who do a great job of getting everyone to try some new steps. And Vasily’s Russian family and friends serenaded the happy bride and groom with a traditional song to wish them good luck and they danced around in a circle.

Engagements

I am determined to get these posted before some of these wonderful couples get married! Yes, I’ve been too busy to blog these engagements but August is a great time to revisit earlier summer shoots, right? Here’s some of my favorites and I made my self-imposed deadline…Randi and Mike are getting married in Pa. on Aug. 25. For the rest of the couples, I’m looking forward to shooting their weddings in Sept. + November. And stay tuned for more recent engagements coming next week!

Cheryl + Drew’s Disco Glam wedding – The Bolger Center, Potomac, Maryland – June 23, 2012

I knew from the start that Cheryl and Drew’s wedding was going to be different. The first clue was the theme…disco glam. The second was my pre-wedding phone call with the couple to discuss all the final details. I spent a good half hour of that call with Drew while Cheryl was out of earshot, talking about all the surprises he had planned for Cheryl. There was the giant Kiddush cup, his suit pants that transformed from straight legs into hot pink lined bellbottoms in the middle of their first dance and the musicians he hired especially to do their processional and recessional music. I have never seen a chuppah of Lucite and their first look was just as memorable. How perfect was it that Drew bowed down to her and then checked under her dress! I have to say that they did a fabulous job carrying out their theme! The also did the Hora outside during cocktails which made for some very fun pictures. For the reception, the Bolger Center was transformed into a disco palace of hot pink, black and silver. They broke out into the Hustle in the middle of their first dance and everything down to the lettering and record albums used to decorate the guest card table were true to the disco era.
