Congressional Country Club wedding – Bethesda, Maryland

Congressional Country Club wedding Deb Lindsey Photography_01

It’s always a good spring when I get to photograph a wedding at Congressional Country Club! It’s such a gorgeous venue and just a few minutes from home. April 30th was a little cooler than usual — although this spring has hardly been the usual in DC and at least it wasn’t raining!! It was also one of the most popular dates of the season this year. Kate started the day surrounded by her girls and her family at her parent’s house in Potomac and the weather cooperated enough for us to take advantage of their lovely backyard and the blooming pink dogwoods. The boys gathered at Congressional Country Club then headed to The Chapel at Our Lady of Lourdes on the campus of Georgetown Prep where Justin attended school. After years of my kids swimming at the Prep pool, this was my first time shooting a wedding in their chapel. I just loved the ironwork on the doors and some of my favorite photos of the day were framed by those doors (see above). One of the highlights of the ceremony was the look on Justin’s face as he caught a glimpse of his bride for the first time. After the ceremony we headed to the club to take some portraits around the clubhouse and on the 18th green with the clubhouse in the background. Kate surprised her groom with a wedding cake decorated with sailboats and together they wowed their guests with their first dance (dips and all!). And you know it’s a serious party when the groom breaks out the Budweiser jacket midway through the reception. After many weddings at Congressional I’m not sure I’ve ever shot a bouquet toss there and this one looked really cool from above. I’d love to say I took the photo but it’s a real reason why I have such talented second shooters with me–to get every angle.

Patapsco Valley State Park wedding – Ellicott City, Maryland

Patapsco Valley State Park wedding Deb Lindsey Photography_01It’s pretty obvious I was a little obsessed with a few things at Sarah + Brenden’s wedding. Where to start? Her dress (amazing and perfect for the setting), her edible bouquet, the couple’s dog Ollie (a perfectly behaved gentleman the whole day long) the flower girl and her brother the ring bearer (adorable). And of course, the car. The 1946 Ford truck was restored by the groom and his father in law and originally belonged to the groom’s grandfather. In addition to being mechanically inclined, Brenden and his mother made the luncheon napkins from scraps of quilting material in addition to making the bow ties his brothers wore. This was my first time at Patapsco Valley State Park and the spot they chose for the wedding was gorgeous, overlooking the river. With a rainy start to the day it was a little touch and go as to whether we’d be able to take advantage of the vantage point. By show time, the clouds were parting and it was a quick but lovely ceremony followed by a vegetarian luncheon. It was a small wedding but one filled with personal touches that made it such a pleasure to photograph.

Strong Mansion wedding – Dickerson, Maryland

A Strong Mansion wedding anytime of year is beautiful but on a sunny fall day, it is spectacular. Melissa + Mike’s mid-November wedding was a crisp and bright day with just the last remnants of foliage to color the trees. They are both high school English teachers at Wootton High School (a rival of my kids school Churchill!) and their day reflected their shared profession and passion for reading. Their friend who officiated the wedding held a Harry Potter book, the table decoration were favorite novels and their table display listed the Contents of Tables! And their party? A crazy good dance party complete with a family tradition of a giant orange foam cowboy hat passed around the dance floor and one of the best Matron of Honor speeches ever, complete with choreography.

Family portraits – Silver Spring, Maryland

It is such a treat for me to spend time with this adorable (and growing) family. I met them last year when H was pregnant and they wanted some family photos with their young daughter and then again once their baby boy was born. They are so completely willing to let me document their interaction with each other and some of my favorite photos from the first session were the three of them jumping on the bed. We recreated that (sort of) again this time including baby A. Such natural photos of them playing, blowing bubbles, playing airplane and on the floor with Legos are so much fun for me to shoot and for them, they get a nice slice of their life with their young family.

Family Portraits – Washington, DC

It seems to me that the dead of winter is a good time change up the blog a bit and post some of the fun family and baby portrait portraits I had in the late fall and early winter of last year. And a little hint for the mini baby boom going on amongst my brides from 2-3 years ago that have just come out with announcements for summer babies! I was fortunate to photograph so many expressive babies and toddlers this year–such sweet faces and personalities! I don’t know why I prefer black and white photography for children but it feels so timeless and classic. These photos could have been taken in 2015 or decades earlier. I love doing family portraits and the group below is a mix of my former brides and grooms who have now grown their families as well as new families who find me through word of mouth.

Bethesda Country Club spring wedding – Maryland

On a cooler than usual almost Memorial Day, it seems like a good time to look back on Lauren + Manny’s sophisticated and classic early spring wedding. The leaves were not quite on the trees for their big day but it was warmer than usual and the late afternoon light once we got to Bethesda Country Club was soft and romantic, just like their wedding. I loved their elegant palette of soft greys for the bridal party, white flowers with just a hint of blush and candelabras and candlelight for the reception room. Manny was incredibly dapper in his white jacket and Lauren was gorgeous in her fitted gown. The two of them together just looked so timeless and classic. Special thanks to event planner Kay at Howerton + Wooten Events for keeping everything on track and attending to all the little details that made their day so stunning.

Baltimore, Maryland winter wedding

Quite a few aspects of  Ana + Jeremy’s small November wedding appealed to me while a couple more presented an interesting challenge. I love a small wedding as a change of pace and it’s always cool being in Baltimore. A small dinner reception at a great pizza restaurant before the ceremony mixed it up even further. The tricky part was the 9 pm ceremony in the dark at Patterson Park Pagoda.  I had some familiarity with the site having done Hannah + Hal’s engagement photos there in April. My day with Ana + Jeremy’s  started with their first look just before sunset in the park. As the light faded we explored inside and around the Pagoda and then we returned there much later in the evening for the ceremony. Thankfully the building was glowing from the inside which made for my favorite photos of the day just after sunset. It was tough to leave the warmth of the restaurant (with awesome custom pizzas) and head out into the chilly night for the ceremony. But it was pretty magical on a still dark night in the midst of the city to watch Ana and Jeremy get married while surrounded by their nearest and dearest. It was a pleasure working with event planner Stephanie Bradshaw who was nice enough to put a little bit about the wedding on her blog as well. Below are some of my favorite shots from the day.

Holly Hills Country Club wedding – Ijamsville, Maryland

All my weddings are special to me. When a couple chooses me to be their wedding photographer it’s beyond an honor. It’s a trust they place in me to capture the memories of their day. Seven or eight years ago when my kids were much smaller than the giant teenagers they’ve now become, I hired Jennifer to be my part-time babysitter. To say that they loved her is an understatement. They looked forward to the days Jenn was sitting so much that the disappointment was visible when they were stuck with me for the day. Jenn became part of our family and I had always promised that when she got married I would shoot her wedding. This October I got to fulfill my promise as she and Justin had a warm and funny and slightly chilly outdoor ceremony on a hillside in Ijamsville. A very special part of their ceremony included their adorable one year old daughter Maddie who was a complete trooper as she was pulled down the aisle in a wagon and presented with a special necklace during the ceremony. The joy of their little family on their special day was infectious. Another special part of the day for me was having my whole family there. I’ve been shooting weddings for 13 years and they’ve never seen me at work. I entrusted my son Wyatt to be my assistant for the after ceremony portraits and it was quite amusing to watch him try to make Jenn’s veil fly. The biggest surprise for me was when my daughter Hannah asked to help as well and she was my trusty assistant for my sunset shot! Their reception highlights for me were Jenn’s dance with her dad–being an only child and very close to her parents the reaction from her mom was priceless. And the newly official Richards family took many turns around the dance floor happy as can be.

Musket Ridge Golf Club wedding – Myersville, Maryland

Sandy + Peter picked a picture perfect day for their intimate wedding at Musket Ridge just outside of Frederick, Maryland. As they stood under the white pergola which doubled as a chuppah, the traditional Jewish ceremony  began with both bride and groom escorted by their parents. Sandy, in particular, was just beaming as she made her way down the aisle. With stunning views of the Catoctin Mountains in the background , they were surrounded by close friends and family as they exchanged their vows. A crowded dance floor (not always the case with daytime weddings) and moving toasts rounded out the day. And a special shout out to extraordinary Matron of Honor Katherine, the fabulous Washington Post photographer who recommended me for the job!

Kashmira + James’ wedding – Walkers Overlook + St. James, Maryland

I do love a Friday wedding. And this year, Friday is the new Saturday. James + Kashmira are my first of three Friday weddings this year and their day couldn’t have been better. Since we’d never met in person, I wasn’t sure what to expect exactly but I knew from our many conversations that they had very definite ideas about what they wanted for their wedding photography. Which is a good thing. That vision and the amazing attention to detail that they brought to their wedding celebration made for some really fun photos and some really gorgeous portraits. Their ceremony at James’ alma mater the St. James School near Hagerstown took place in the quaint school chapel overseen by the school’s headmaster. The grounds were a lovely backdrop for the bride and groom and bridal party portraits. We hit it exactly at peak season for the numerous cherry trees. Then we headed to another new venue for me, called Walkers Overlook near Frederick for their reception. Beautiful views and a fabulous old barn—what more could I ask for? Perfect weather? A groom in a cobalt suit carrying a family heirloom pocket watch? A teary father-daughter dance? A crowded and energetic dance floor? It just couldn’t have been better.
