Adas Israel wedding Washington, DC part two

L+L’s daytime Adas Israel wedding in Washington, DC on a hot summer day continued with a kosher luncheon in the social room of the temple. The bright room was lovely, decorated with bright purple accents and oranges and delicate family teacups as centerpieces. It was simple and elegant.

As cocktails finished the couple made their grand entrance and shared their first dance surrounded by family and friends. The toasts by the brother and sister and parents of the brides brought tears. The closeness of their families made each speech so personal and heartfelt.

After lunch the real party started with both brides dancing with their fathers and the couple going up in chairs during the Hora. Pies were served and the day wound down with more dancing and a few minutes of group prayer. The brides managed to find a moment to themselves amidst their partying friends and family. Those intimate moments are some of my favorites of the day.

District Winery wedding – part two

Welcome to part two of Joe + Carl’s District Winery wedding!

It was such a gorgeous sky seen from the patio of the venue overlooking the Anacostia River and the Capitol Riverfront which of course means time to pull out the couple for a quick portrait. After cocktails the guests sat at long tables decorated with greenery from the grooms’ garden and the family style meal began. The toasts were heartfelt from both family and friends who spoke about how special these two men are and how many lives they’ve touched over the years. And then the party. So it’s always fun for me to photograph a crowded fun dance floor but when several of the people are friends from my work at the Washington Post Food section it’s a blast.

When the grooms are enjoying the party as much (if not more) than everyone else? A total bonus. One highlight of the party was the cutting of that amazing Charm City Cakes cake. How cute were those cake toppers?

I always try to get a night shot somewhere in the vicinity of the party. There was early talk of a sparkler sendoff but when that didn’t materialize I knew I wanted to use the front of the winery with that fabulous logo. The couple indulged me for a few minutes even after a long night of dancing and I just love that final photo.

Carnegie Institution for Science fall wedding – Part Two

J+C’s glorious fall wedding at Carnegie Institution for Science in Washington, DC continued after their ceremony with cocktails and their reception. First stop was a brief break for just the two of them (in the Jewish tradition it’s called a yichud) and then joined their guests in the rotunda.

Before the ceremony and after they had their first look at Meridian Hill Park, we did some really fun portraits inside and outside at Carnegie. The white columns on the portico that faces 16th Street always make for beautiful clean background and for J+C we were able to use that part of the venue for some bride photos as well as their immediate family and wedding party pictures. As you can tell from those photos–particularly the ones of them in front of those iconic giant dark doors–their enthusiasm and joy was totally contagious!

The reception decor captured fall perfectly with pumpkin centerpieces and orange and cranberry highlights. And how adorable is their cake topper? And the rocks that guests signed with love and words of wisdom were a perfect keepsake of their day.

After the toasts came a slide show of the brides throughout the years which brought howls of laughter and definitely some tears. Their first dance was a hoot that even included air guitar solos! A rowdy hora followed and the evening ended with a double bouquet toss from the upper balcony of the and then a few stolen moments outside the entrance to Carnegie on 15th Street where that ring of lights makes for a wonderful end of night glow.

Carnegie Institution for Science fall wedding

What a stunner of a day it was for J+C’s fall wedding at Carnegie Institution for Science in Washington, DC. A gorgeous blue sky and two stunning brides–it doesn’t get much better than that.

Their wedding day began bright and beautiful as both women got dressed with help from their mothers and then made their way to Meridian Hill Park for an animated first look. I don’t usually do a back to back reveal, but their expressions once they turned around and saw each other were just priceless. We made out way through the park taking full advantage of the blue blue sky and the sunlight before heading to Carnegie Institution for Science for their traditional Jewish wedding. After a ketubah signing in the upstairs library, both brides descended the grand staircase and met under the chuppah and circled each other. Their vows were funny and sweet and J did a fine job breaking the glass at the end of the ceremony. Stay tuned for part two with more portraits of the couple and their family and their rocking reception!!

Press – M+T on Stone Fox Bride blog!

Monica + Talisha’s small waterfront wedding in Crownsville, Maryland near Annapolis was published today on Stone Fox Bride. It’s exciting for me as a wedding photographer when one of my favorite weddings of all time gets a random request to be published on a national wedding blog. They were stunning brides which didn’t hurt the photos one bit!

You can check out my original blog post and see all the fabulous photos from their wedding day! But I just couldn’t resist posting here a few of my favorites that I think capture the spirit of their wedding celebration.

Watergate Hotel reception in DC – Bob + Dan’s wedding part two

After Bob + Dan’s Washington National Cathedral wedding ceremony (detailed in part one) we took advantage of some of the very interesting light and windows inside the Cathedral before heading down Rock Creek Parkway to the new and fabulous Watergate Hotel for their wedding reception.

A quick trip to their top floor suite and a sweet gift exchange was followed by a windy photo session on the balcony of their room. How amazing is the view of the Potomac River, Georgetown and Virginia? The original plan was to do these photos at the Top of the Gate, but wind prevented that. Honestly, I was so happy with the portraits on the balcony that I’m not sure we would have done better at the very top!

The vibe at the hotel fit the couple so well. It is a sleek and elegant space with a retro feel that is really fresh. I admit to being a little obsessed with the reflective textured columns in the lobby of the hotel which I thought made a lovely B&W late night portrait of the couple.

The party was on as soon as the grooms hit the dance floor. Considering that the couple met two-stepping at a country and western bar, let’s just say they have some moves. Especially Bob! I loved the decor of the room with it’s nod to the history of the hotel including tables or Bob Woodward and Richard Nixon. And I would be very remiss if I didn’t give a shout out to Michael Deltette, Director of Catering and Events at the Watergate. He referred me to the grooms and he kept everything at the reception running so smoothly (as he always does!!).

Washington National Cathedral wedding

I am so excited to finally share part one of Bob + Dan’s gorgeous fall Washington National Cathedral wedding and Watergate Hotel reception in October. Their wedding was my first time at both locations and it’s always such a fun creative challenge to photograph a wedding in a new (to me!) space. We started the day at their home in Columbia Heights surrounded by their entire wedding party and immediate family. It was such a fun group and I just love the photographs of the two of them getting ready together. We drove over to the Cathedral early to spend some time in lovely Bishop’s Garden for groom portraits and wedding party photos. Let’s just say it was a teensy bit blustery. Not gale force but definitely windy!

The building itself is simply stunning. And ornate and incredibly beautiful. The ceremony took place in the far back of the Cathedral on the High Altar. Which makes for a very very long walk down the aisle. The ceremony was personal and joyful and a true celebration of Bob + Dan’s relationship. A receiving line followed the ceremony and then since I couldn’t resist, a few more interior wedding day portraits of the two of them before we proceeded to the Watergate for their party. Those photographs and the wedding reception and details will be coming soon!

Favorite wedding photographs of 2016 Part Two

My favorite wedding photographs of 2016 continues with the second half of the year. The fall wedding season brought to two destination weddings, one on Mackinac Island, Michigan and the other in Provincetown, Massachusetts. I had fun exploring both locations and it’s always a great creative challenge to photograph a wedding in a new location so different from the metropolitan DC area.

Here are the full blog posts from each of the weddings below but enjoy the five images I’ve chosen from each one.

Favorite wedding photographs of 2016 Part One

In my many years as a wedding photographer, one thing I have not done is a year end round up of my favorite wedding photographs. It’s a new year so I thought I’d start it off right but trying something new!

I decided to make the task even harder by limiting each wedding (that was allowed to appear online) to five images. These are often my favorites or ones that I may have overlooked in previous blog posts. As hard as it is to narrow down each wonderful day into so few images, it was great fun to look back over the past year and the great couples I had the pleasure to work with.

Here are the full blog posts from each of the weddings below but enjoy the five images I’ve chosen from each! And stay tuned later in the week for part two from the second half of 2016.

Press – Washingtonian Bride & Groom blog post

meridian-house-wedding_01meridian-house-wedding_02

I’m very excited to share today’s Washingtonian Bride & Groom blog post on Chris + Scott’s beautiful Meridian House wedding that I photographed this spring in DC. It was truly a wedding with everything, spectacular venue, perfect weather and a wonderful couple. The highlight of the day for me, both as a witness and a wedding photographer, was their ceremony. It was so emotional and personal. Just looking at Scott’s tears while Chris reads his vows, gets me every time. Special thanks to Kawania Wooten at HW Events who recommended me to the happy couple and who ran the whole day flawlessly!!

Make sure to check out my blog post earlier this year on this wonderful wedding!
