Carnegie Institution for Science fall wedding – Part Two

J+C’s glorious fall wedding at Carnegie Institution for Science in Washington, DC continued after their ceremony with cocktails and their reception. First stop was a brief break for just the two of them (in the Jewish tradition it’s called a yichud) and then joined their guests in the rotunda.

Before the ceremony and after they had their first look at Meridian Hill Park, we did some really fun portraits inside and outside at Carnegie. The white columns on the portico that faces 16th Street always make for beautiful clean background and for J+C we were able to use that part of the venue for some bride photos as well as their immediate family and wedding party pictures. As you can tell from those photos–particularly the ones of them in front of those iconic giant dark doors–their enthusiasm and joy was totally contagious!

The reception decor captured fall perfectly with pumpkin centerpieces and orange and cranberry highlights. And how adorable is their cake topper? And the rocks that guests signed with love and words of wisdom were a perfect keepsake of their day.

After the toasts came a slide show of the brides throughout the years which brought howls of laughter and definitely some tears. Their first dance was a hoot that even included air guitar solos! A rowdy hora followed and the evening ended with a double bouquet toss from the upper balcony of the and then a few stolen moments outside the entrance to Carnegie on 15th Street where that ring of lights makes for a wonderful end of night glow.

Carnegie Institution for Science fall wedding

What a stunner of a day it was for J+C’s fall wedding at Carnegie Institution for Science in Washington, DC. A gorgeous blue sky and two stunning brides–it doesn’t get much better than that.

Their wedding day began bright and beautiful as both women got dressed with help from their mothers and then made their way to Meridian Hill Park for an animated first look. I don’t usually do a back to back reveal, but their expressions once they turned around and saw each other were just priceless. We made out way through the park taking full advantage of the blue blue sky and the sunlight before heading to Carnegie Institution for Science for their traditional Jewish wedding. After a ketubah signing in the upstairs library, both brides descended the grand staircase and met under the chuppah and circled each other. Their vows were funny and sweet and J did a fine job breaking the glass at the end of the ceremony. Stay tuned for part two with more portraits of the couple and their family and their rocking reception!!

Fall Carnegie Institution of Science wedding DC – Part Two

Abbie + Jon’s fall Carnegie Institution of Science DC wedding was a little rainy and overcast. The weather really allowed us to take full advantage of the building for portraits, both inside and out. Those giant dark studded doors on the portico are such a great  backdrop. As is the light grey exterior of the building and those columns!!

The combination of the soft diffuse light and how much fun Abbie + Jon are together made for some sweet wedding day portraits.

After a few quiet moments together after the ceremony, the real party got started. After cocktails came emotional toasts from both sets of proud parents and the best men and maid of honor. Their first dance in the rotunda was surrounded by all their friends and family. That iconic floor took center stage and made for great overhead photos. I love to photograph dancing (especially the Hora) from that vantage point!

I loved the color palette of royal blue and gold with low white flower arrangements in the dining room. And the Treat Yo’ Self cookie table for dessert was a huge hit.

At the end of the night we went outside for a few night photos. One of my absolute favorites from the day came from that 10 minute break in the festivities. The real entrance to the Carnegie Institution for Science is on P St. and that brightly lit overhang makes for such a romantic night photograph. The 16th street steps are good too, but for me there’s something so classic about that front door photo.

There are so many reasons why I love a Carnegie Institution of Science DC wedding. I think the photos from Abbie + Jon’s day show exactly why it is one of my favorites and so classically Washington. Check out more of my real weddings and there’s lots more Carnegie images all over my website!

Provincetown, Massachusetts wedding

Nick + Brendan had such a wonderful wedding in Provincetown, Massachusetts on a glorious weekend in mid-September. The town is one of their favorites and and site of their engagement. And I just loved being there to document it for them.

Brendan and I go back almost five years and when we first met when he was my daughter’s high school ceramics teacher and just slightly more important, her first high school coach. I could go on and on about Brendan and how special he is as a teacher and a mentor to so many kids and how much my daughter loves him and how she insisted I take her along as an assistant to their Lincoln Memorial engagement session last fall. I was so happy to know Nick as well and to see how sweet they are as a couple.

As much as I like a wedding day first look, I really enjoy it when the couple gets ready in the same space. So many tender moments happen, like a kiss in the mirror or laughing/crying as they exchange gifts and even helping tie and tie or tuck in a shirt.

For the wedding portraits, I found a lush patch of green grass and flowers adjacent to the beach just outside the house they were staying; it turned out to be wonderful for photos (in other words the sun was in just the right place). A top priority for portraits for the couple was our trip to Pilgrim Monument, the exact spot where they became engaged more than a year before. For the history buffs, it’s also the spot where the Mayflower landed in 1620.

We then headed to the wedding and reception location, The Crown and Anchor, right in the heart of Provincetown on Commercial Street. The wedding took place on the sand just behind the inn and as the photos show, there were few dry eyes on the beach as the couple said their vows. Their nautical theme was perfect for their wedding ceremony and reception and the tiniest details, including their dog Juliet’s wedding outfit printed with whales, were not overlooked. Those details also include the rings (Brendan made Nick’s engagement ring!) and the ceramic vases (also Brendan-made) filled with white flowers that the women in the wedding party carried down the aisle.

Take a look at my other nautical-themed September destination wedding and stay tuned for more portraits and the reception photos from Nick + Brendan’s wedding coming on Wednesday!

St. Francis Monastery wedding sneak peek – Washington, DC

It is a good day as a DC wedding photographer to have a sunny 70 degree day in early November. Add in an early Sunday ceremony with a beautiful location like the St. Francis Monastery (one of Washington’s hidden gems!) and plenty of time to take some wedding day portraits while it was still light out. Did I mention it was peak weekend for fall foliage? J+J hit the jackpot and as their photographer I was doing my happy dance. Sunlight, love and color are some of my favorite things!

I just love fall weddings!!  I can’t wait to share more of J+J’s wedding with you and with the happy couple. For now, check out some of my other recent DC area weddings. I’m off to edit the rest of their wedding!

Strong Mansion wedding – Dickerson, Maryland

A Strong Mansion wedding anytime of year is beautiful but on a sunny fall day, it is spectacular. Melissa + Mike’s mid-November wedding was a crisp and bright day with just the last remnants of foliage to color the trees. They are both high school English teachers at Wootton High School (a rival of my kids school Churchill!) and their day reflected their shared profession and passion for reading. Their friend who officiated the wedding held a Harry Potter book, the table decoration were favorite novels and their table display listed the Contents of Tables! And their party? A crazy good dance party complete with a family tradition of a giant orange foam cowboy hat passed around the dance floor and one of the best Matron of Honor speeches ever, complete with choreography.

Belle Haven Country Club wedding Alexandria, Virginia

Katherine and Trey could not have picked a more glorious fall day for their classic 10/10 wedding. We gathered at Katherine’s parents lovely home in Alexandria near the Potomac River for photos before the ceremony. The bride made such a dramatic entrance down the sweeping staircase to see her groom for the first time. A second story porch, a weeping willow tree and just a slight hint of fall foliage all made for such wonderful pictures. Did I mention Katherine’s dad’s red Corvette?! What a great getaway car! Next stop was the church for their ceremony conducted by a childhood friend of Trey’s. You can tell by the ceremony photos that there were lots of personal stories in the mix. The reception was held at the Belle Haven Country Club where we were able to make a few fun photos on the golf course before the couple joined their guests on the back patio of the club for a chilly cocktail reception. Elegant custom cocktails, funny toasts and their cake cutting with a sword and a packed dance floor were some the reception highlights. It’s always a pleasure to work with Anne Kelley at Atrendy Wedding who made sure the day ran smoothly from start to finish.

Family Portraits – Washington, DC

It seems to me that the dead of winter is a good time change up the blog a bit and post some of the fun family and baby portrait portraits I had in the late fall and early winter of last year. And a little hint for the mini baby boom going on amongst my brides from 2-3 years ago that have just come out with announcements for summer babies! I was fortunate to photograph so many expressive babies and toddlers this year–such sweet faces and personalities! I don’t know why I prefer black and white photography for children but it feels so timeless and classic. These photos could have been taken in 2015 or decades earlier. I love doing family portraits and the group below is a mix of my former brides and grooms who have now grown their families as well as new families who find me through word of mouth.

Cosmos Club wedding – Washington, DC

Anne + Aly’s Cosmos Club wedding in late September was done with a pretty quick turnaround. They pulled together a beautiful wedding in a short time and it didn’t hurt that they chose such a classic Washington venue. The gilded gold ballroom is instantly recognizable and the grounds of the club, while not extensive, were just enough for an intimate outdoor ceremony. The exterior of the building with it’s steps and wrought iron made for fun couple and family portraits. We even made a quick foray into the parking lot for a photo in front of the art gallery mural adjacent to the club. Small touches throughout the wedding really added to the day. The flowers by Sidra Forman were beautifully placed in small arrangements throughout the building.  And the highlight of the reception had to be the surprise appearance of a belly dancer (a nod to the groom’s Egyptian heritage). The crowd went crazy!

Park Hyatt wedding – Washington, DC

It’s very tempting to dispense with the recap of Caroline + Miguel’s wedding day and get right to the photos. It was such a great day from preparation through the reception that I almost don’t know where to begin. First, Caroline was the coolest bride ever. Literally unflappable. Yes, we were a few minutes late. No sweat. Yes, it was very windy and yes, our first look plans sort of fell by the wayside and their moment turned out to be in front of a bunch of tourist on bikes in front the Jefferson Memorial. No matter. It was a gorgeous sunny October day and everything happened just as it should. Even the Marine One flyover. Yes, we missed the first time but we caught the second and third one. And no hassles by Park Police at the monument—double bonus. Their ceremony at the Park Hyatt was sweet, a little tearful and pretty hilarious. Especially when Miguel worked up a sweat and his groomsmen swarmed around dry him off. And all this was just the tip of the iceberg. I really don’t know where to start with the reception but I can honestly say I’ve never been to one quite like it. Heartfelt speeches, particularly by Caroline’s dad and Miguel’s best man started the night which then turned into the best party ever courtesy of their band Go Go Gadget. They are a bar band—not a wedding band—and I’d been warned that they would tear the roof off the place. They didn’t disappoint. It’s rare that both my 2nd shooter (who chooses to not be identified in my blog posts) and I want to put down the cameras and watch the band. Or dance. Their set of 60 songs in 60 minutes featuring all tunes from the 90s was masterful. The crowd was on their feet nonstop and the energy in the room was insane. Another highlight came when Caroline’s dad took the stage to play guitar and sing a great version of  “I Saw Her Standing There.” OK, I guess I did find something to write about but really, when I look at these photos I just feel the incredible energy that was Caroline + Miguel’s wedding day. Finally, a special shout out to Caroline’s mom Nancy. These two strong southern women knew exactly what they wanted and made sure it all happened. Working closely with Michael Deltette at the Park Hyatt, it was one stellar day (and night)!
