Wedding engagement slide show – Washington, DC

This week’s plan to do a post with all my recent fun wedding engagement sessions got a bit derailed this morning. I received an email from a special MOB (mother of the bride) who wanted to know if I’d do a slide show with their favorite images from the recent engagement session I did with her daughter and her fiance around Washington, DC.

I had so much fun with Hayley and Neil this summer as we took photos at the Jefferson Memorial (Neil is a UVA grad) and around Nationals Park (they’re both big Bryce Harper fans). We had a really short window to get the session done since Neil is heading back to military training and I’m thankful we had such a nice day. One shot included in the slide show was a special request from the bride-to-be. She had a copy of her mother’s wedding day photo of her parents sitting (yes, sitting in a wedding dress) along the edge of the Tidal Basin. Her dad was in full uniform and the pose was a little awkward and hard to hold without almost falling in. But we recreated it with great success.

Previously I’ve only done slide shows for weddings (and occasionally for other events) but never for an engagement session and WOW did I love the result. So while I work on my next post here’s is the slide show I made with the couple’s favorite images. And I’m now thinking this needs to be a regular thing.

Documenting a Family – from wedding engagements to family portraits

I truly love my job as a wedding photographer. When a couple chooses me to document their day it’s such a great honor and I value the trust they put in me to photograph one of the biggest days in their life so far. But it’s even better when I continue to photograph the moments (both big and small) over the years as their family grows. Documenting a family as their grow.

I have had the pleasure of photographing Jennifer and Nate from their (very chilly) Eastern Market wedding engagement photo in January 2012, their wedding in late February the same year (also very chilly!). A little over a year later we returned to Eastern Market for maternity photos and in April 2014 I got to meet their son Graham for a family portrait session at Brookside Gardens. Last summer we got together for a a full family session  that I’ve wanted to do forever at the sunflower fields at McKee-Beshers Wildlife Management Area in Poolesville. In hindsight taking a baby and an energetic toddler into a field of flowers with bees and 90 degree heat might not have been the best idea, but it made for some cute photos.

Earlier this month I was pleased to be asked to photograph Jennifer’s parents 50th wedding anniversary celebration in Olney. In addition to photographing the party we took the time to do some lovely spring family portraits and as a big bonus, photos of their adorable kiddies chasing bubbles.

Wedding Engagement Photos – What do we need to know?

This unseasonably warm winter weather has me thinking about my upcoming spring wedding engagement photo sessions. It is tempting to take advantage of 70 degree days in February, but most people prefer to wait for some green on the trees and even a few flowers. So now’s a good time to pull together some tips for planning your session and answering a few common questions.

When should we do the photos?

I recommend that you try to do your wedding engagement photos in a different season and location than where you’re getting married. It’s not always possible, but it’s nice to be able to mix the look of things up a bit. If you’re getting married at a vineyard in the fall, maybe the engagement session could be in an urban setting in the spring. For the actual timing on the day of the photography session, I prefer to schedule late in the day for the best light (starting 1 ½ to 2 hours before sunset depending on the where we’ll be) and to photograph on a sunny day. On your wedding day I work with whatever the weather brings–for the engagement session, a sunny day makes for the best photos!

Where should we go?

Washington DC is full of iconic spots to take portraits. If you’re looking for something that immediately says the “Nation’s Capital,” the Mall is a logical spot. The Reflecting Pool, the Lincoln Memorial or the Capitol grounds are all great backdrops.

Where you had your first date or how you like to spend your time together. Is it hiking on the C&O Canal or shopping in Georgetown? Playing with your pooch or maybe it’s a restaurant where you like to hang out? Sometimes it’s just fun to wander your neighborhood getting a sense of where you live and what feels familiar.

And if nothing comes to mind and you need some help deciding where to go, I can help! There are several interesting spots and parks around town that I can recommend. Sometimes it’s just nice to have some pretty flowers in the photo and leave the focus on the two of you.

What should we wear?

This is the most frequently asked question by far! First, wear something you think you look great in. When you feel good about how you look, that confidence shows in the photographs. Look at the color combos between the two of you. If you’re wearing purple your partner shouldn’t be wearing orange! The same goes for mixing prints and patterns. Keep your styles at a similar level. If you’re wearing a suit and your fiancé is in shorts it’s probably a mismatch in photos. The feedback I’ve gotten from couples is that if they’re a little more dressed up than they’d usually be on a weekend that’s about the right level. It’s not necessary to have hair and makeup professionally done but it doesn’t hurt! I love a pop of color, especially against green trees or those white pillars all over DC. If you’re wearing heels, bring a pair of comfortable shoes for walking. Photographing around DC will almost always involve some walking. Bringing a change of clothes is fine and can add to the variety of the photos. Changing shirts or putting a sweater over a shirt is easy but a full outfit change might be trickier on the Mall or somewhere without a restroom.

How much time will it take?

Generally I plan for about an hour and a half to two hours for an engagement session. That includes the time we’re actually shooting and the walking to get there. I’m not opposed to a couple locations as long as they’re not too far away from each other.

I’m not that comfortable in front of the camera. Can you help??

Of course! I’m not a fan of overly posed photos, but I completely understand that it’s hard to be in front of the camera (and it’s one of the reasons I prefer to stay behind it). I will put you in the prettiest light, give you a few tips if you need them and let you interact naturally. To me the best wedding engagement photos capture your relationship and are about having fun. I tend to shoot with a longer lens so that gives me a little distance and makes it feel less intrusive.

Having your wedding engagement photos done should be fun and easy and I work hard to make it that way. It’s also a great way for us to get to know each other a bit before the wedding day and the other bonus is you get to spend a some quality time with your sweetheart hugging, kissing and holding hands in a public setting!

Brookside Gardens wedding engagement session

Brookside Gardens in Wheaton is a lovely spot for a wedding engagement session. Anytime of year is pretty there but when the roses are blooming in late spring, it is a wonderland. R + D chose the grounds near where they grew up for their wedding engagement session and between the sun and the flowers I was in photography heaven. I can’t wait until their summer wedding coming up fast at the Gaylord at National Harbor.

Check out some of my other wedding engagement sessions!

Lincoln Memorial wedding engagement session

The Lincoln Memorial is such an iconically DC spot for an wedding engagement session! Some years I spend more time photographing couples on the National Mall and particularly at Lincoln than anywhere else in DC.

Brendan and Nick are getting married in Provincetown, MA next fall and since they live (and met) in Washington DC, they wanted to make sure we had some photographs that were recognizably Washington. We began at their home in Columbia Heights for some very necessary photos including their pup Juliet and then made our way downtown on a brisk fall day. My assistant for this session (seen in shadows in one of the B&W photographs) was my darling daughter, who has had Brendan as her ceramics teacher for all four years in high school. To say this was a special photography session for me is an understatement.

I was also thrilled to have the photo session appear on United With Love. I can’t wait for their wedding in September!

Washington, DC spring wedding engagement sessions

Spring is a beautiful time to be taking photos as a wedding and engagement photographer in Washington DC, I do manage to avoid formal sessions in the middle of the cherry blossoms but only because there are so many other glorious options to find blooms in the spring in DC.

Three recent sessions included the National Portrait Gallery,  the National Gallery of Art Sculpture Garden , the columns at and gigantic door at the National Archives including a floor strewn with confetti after the annual Cherry Blossom Parade and even some trees near the Archives metro station. Another one of my favorite spots any time of year for wedding engagements is Dumbarton Oaks in Georgetown where the honeysuckle was in bloom.

I love photographing couples for their wedding engagement portraits. It’s such a great way to get to know them before I photograph their wedding and it allows us to explore some other locations besides where they’ll be getting married!!

Petworth DC wedding engagement

My first wedding engagement session of 2015 was with Katy + David in their restaurant/kitchen space  Eats Place, in Petworth, DC. In addition to showcasing Katy’s dumplings, they hosts guests chefs and and pop up eateries. It was great fun to explore their space inside and out, including the downstairs kitchen and a quick upstairs visit with their adorable pup. Their wedding is this Saturday at the Park Hyatt, a mecca for foodie weddings.

The Park Hyatt is one of my favorites locations for elegant and modern weddings in DC.

Two Wedding engagements – New York City, Washington DC

Snow covered lawns and frigid temperatures make me long for spring. But until my spring engagements get underway here’s a little look back at my last engagement session of 2014 and to my first one of 2015. S+B had two sessions; one in their New York City neighbor in the Village and another over Thanksgiving at Meadowlark Gardens in Virginia. I had to include a shot from the balcony  of their fabulous Manhattan apartment at night. Seriously, what a view!! And the timing of this post is very appropriate since their wedding is this Saturday in DC.

K+J live in San Francisco and were in town over Christmas to celebrate the holidays, do lots of wedding planning and have their engagement photos taken. Extra bonus points for us that the day after Christmas was sunny and 50 degrees! FDR Memorial is a favorite of their (and a new favorite of mine) and we wandered from the Tidal Basin to the WWI Memorial to the Reflecting Pool. Needless to say we were not the only people out enjoying the unseasonably warm weather. Can’t wait to photograph their wedding in Alexandria in May with the fabulous Janice Carnevale at Bellwether Events.

Maggie + Roy engagement session – Washington, DC

I’m sure I’ve mentioned it before but I love when couples’ take me to new locations for engagement sessions! Maggie + Roy hit a trifecta and all in pretty close proximity. And best of all, these places were some of their favorites in DC. First stop the Phillips Collection where we spent time with their favorite paintings and found a really cool light exhibit that made for those awesome silhouettes.  Next stop was Teaism for a quick spot of tea and some cookies and finally to their home neighborhood near 14th & U and Ben’s Chili Bowl. I’m a little ashamed to admit that I’ve never spent time in any of these places until these photos…I may have to have my native Washingtonian card revoked. I’ll see Maggie + Roy again in less than a month when I photograph their elopement! Yup, just us and an officiant. Should be fun…

Andra + Daniel’s engagement session

Just a quick few lovely engagement session shots to start of a crazy busy Memorial Day week. Andra and Daniel and I spent a lovely spring afternoon at Dumbarton Oaks and I’m looking forward to their wedding coming up in a few short weeks!
