Cosmos Club wedding – Washington, DC

Anne + Aly’s Cosmos Club wedding in late September was done with a pretty quick turnaround. They pulled together a beautiful wedding in a short time and it didn’t hurt that they chose such a classic Washington venue. The gilded gold ballroom is instantly recognizable and the grounds of the club, while not extensive, were just enough for an intimate outdoor ceremony. The exterior of the building with it’s steps and wrought iron made for fun couple and family portraits. We even made a quick foray into the parking lot for a photo in front of the art gallery mural adjacent to the club. Small touches throughout the wedding really added to the day. The flowers by Sidra Forman were beautifully placed in small arrangements throughout the building.  And the highlight of the reception had to be the surprise appearance of a belly dancer (a nod to the groom’s Egyptian heritage). The crowd went crazy!

St. Regis wedding – Washington, DC

I am closing out my 2015 blog posts with J+S’s elegant St. Regis  wedding in Washington, DC. It was a summer Saturday that like many this year was unseasonably cool which made the outdoor ceremony and photos in Lafayette Square literally a breeze. I loved the sophisticated palette for the day and the tall arrangements of varying shades of purple was such a gorgeous pop of color for the ceremony and the reception room was awash in flowers and gold accents. I knew that J+S’s wedding would be fabulous since we had such fun at their engagement session. And they didn’t disappoint. The two of them together are just magic…from the look on S’s face coming back up the aisle newly married to their sweet first dance, it was hard to take a bad photo! So happy new year to all reading and I’ll be back to blogging in January with my 2015 fall weddings!

Park Hyatt wedding – Washington DC

J+E’s Park Hyatt wedding was my second time at the hotel this summer. Good thing I love to shoot there! J+E started their day together alone in their suite getting ready. It made for some nice calm moments and they put on their matching poodle bowties. They did have one other companion in the suite–their adorable poodle Louie who looked so dapper in his bowtie collar. Thankfully it wasn’t too hot to take Louie for a walk and to pose for some photos outside the hotel and in front of the Park Hyatt’s big black doors. Their traditional Jewish wedding started with the Ketubah signing and then proceeded down the aisle and were married under a beautiful chuppah designed by E’s mother. I just loved the flowers by Blue Vanda that transformed their reception with deep jewel tones. And their cake topper is one of my favorites in recent memory…J+E and Louie perched on top! A great party finished up the evening with the Hora, emotional toasts from family and their best women and even a Soul Train line on the dance floor. And as a special treat for me, I was ably assisted by my daughter Hannah. Nothing better than working with my girl!

Park Hyatt wedding – Washington, DC

I always look forward to a Park Hyatt wedding. There are definitely advantages to shooting someplace often, but each couple adds there own dynamic to the day. It’s a fun challenge for me to find new places to make fabulous photos. Carrie and Adam got married on a steamy day in July (yes, still running behind on blogging) and that meant a limit on what we could do outside. We did get off a few quick shots outside the iconic black doors of the Blue Duck Tavern but mostly we were inside. I was blown away by the gorgeous room décor. The flowers over the chuppah were just stunning and the white and blush pink color scheme for the day was lovely as well. One of my favorite moments from the day was when Carrie came out to a room full of family and friends after getting dressed. Her mom peeking her head out from behind the door was priceless. Another favorite was a very small moment while Carrie was getting bustled when Adam leaned over to give her a kiss. It’s just her eyes looking up at him but it is those moments that excite me the most about being a wedding photographer.

Decatur House wedding – Washington, DC

It’s been awhile between blog posts but not for lack of content. Let’s pick up again with Meghan and Mark’s beautiful St. Dominic’s Church wedding and Decatur House reception in mid-June. It was a photographer’s dream in so many respects. Starting with the bride’s preparation photos–a time when it’s often a little hit or miss depending on the light and the location. Getting ready at the Marriott Marquis in DC with wonderful window light started the day off right. All day long there was a lot of  laughter and joy mixed with a little tears. Particularly poignant throughout the day were moments between the bride and her dad since her mother had passed away. After their Catholic ceremony at St. Dominic’s we headed with the wedding party to Lafayette Square for some very fun group photos. I just love it when the whole group gets in on the fun. It was hot but sunny and it was a welcome respite when we headed into the adjacent (and air conditioned) Decatur House for some alone time with the bride + groom. The lead off shot here and the shots inside the upstairs of the house were some of my favorites. The lighting was killer! A great party followed in the Decatur House tent with candelabras and flowers, heartfelt toasts and a rocking good party. Special thanks to Sara Franklin at Social Scene Events for coordinating such a beautiful day!

Meridian Hill Park, DC wedding engagement

There’s a reason why I wait until sunny days to do my wedding engagement sessions and this beauty at Meridian Hill Park (one of my favorite spots for an wedding engagement session) was no exception. I don’t have any control over the weather on the wedding day but I do when we schedule a wedding engagement session!

I had so much fun with H+E at the park and exploring their neighborhood. I can’t wait for their Carnegie Institution for Science wedding in September.

DACOR Bacon House wedding – E+C – Washington, DC

What a cute little gem the DACOR Bacon House is in the middle of downtown DC! When I first met with E+C on a very cold winter evening, I’d heard of the venue but it would be a new shooting experience for me which is always fun. It’s a charming historic house at 18th & F NW with lots of fun nooks and crannies for photos and a wonderful garden patio, perfect for an outdoor wedding in early May. The weather didn’t look like it would completely cooperate (but it did!) so the patio was tented but the wedding took place by the lovely trellis and marble table. I loved how much humor and warmth came through as they took their vows. Dinner was inside in the warm and inviting upstairs rooms of the house including a chandelier in the main room lit by candles. Dancing was back in the patio area where friends and family (and E’s adorable niece) kept the dance floor busy!

Park Hyatt wedding – Washington, DC

To say that food was a priority at the wedding of Katy and David is an understatement. They are the owners of Eat Place in Petworth – the site of their adorable engagement session earlier this year. The Park Hyatt was the perfect host for their big day. And for me, it was a lovely marriage of food photography and wedding work. I knew Katy would be a stylish bride and not just because of her planned wardrobe change into a gorgeous red dress during the reception. I know I’m there to document the moments but I could have spent an hour just photographing her shoes! Both pairs were so cool. I also loved the décor for their reception. The ballroom was glowing in pink and orange and the centerpiece with real oranges and spices and on every table a jar of Katy’s hot sauce. Another fun touch was that during the reception no one was allowed to clink glasses to get the bride & groom to kiss..they had to get up and perform which led to some very amusing group poems and tributes.

Washington, DC spring wedding engagement sessions

Spring is a beautiful time to be taking photos as a wedding and engagement photographer in Washington DC, I do manage to avoid formal sessions in the middle of the cherry blossoms but only because there are so many other glorious options to find blooms in the spring in DC.

Three recent sessions included the National Portrait Gallery,  the National Gallery of Art Sculpture Garden , the columns at and gigantic door at the National Archives including a floor strewn with confetti after the annual Cherry Blossom Parade and even some trees near the Archives metro station. Another one of my favorite spots any time of year for wedding engagements is Dumbarton Oaks in Georgetown where the honeysuckle was in bloom.

I love photographing couples for their wedding engagement portraits. It’s such a great way to get to know them before I photograph their wedding and it allows us to explore some other locations besides where they’ll be getting married!!

Army Navy Club winter wedding in Washington, DC

I first met Suzanne and Ben when I arrived in NYC at the end of October for their engagement shoot. Their apartment overlooking the city was breathtaking and our whirlwind tour of their neighborhood and dinner at the fabulous Momofuku Noodle Bar and dessert from Momofuku Milk Bar were definitely foodie highlights of the trip for me. They aren’t native New Yorkers but you’d never know it—it’s always so cool for me to get shown around by people who know where they’re going! Suzanne is a decisive bride and knew that she wanted an elegant and sophisticated winter wedding. The colder the better. They got their wish with 30 degree temperatures but they were prepared–I loved her wrap and her white gloves—it just epitomized a winter wedding. They had their first look at the Hay Adams overlooking the White House and we then proceeded by vintage car driven by Suzanne’s uncle, to a church service at Memorial Metropolitan United Methodist Church near American University. Their reception at the Army Navy Club continued their theme and also included a rollicking dance party and the most fun photo booth I’ve had seen in some time. Full head masks on people in eveningwear, made for some very fun photos. 2015 is starting out on a very high note. I can’t wait photograph all the other wonderful couples I’ve got lined up for this year.
