Belle Haven Country Club wedding Alexandria, Virginia

Katherine and Trey could not have picked a more glorious fall day for their classic 10/10 wedding. We gathered at Katherine’s parents lovely home in Alexandria near the Potomac River for photos before the ceremony. The bride made such a dramatic entrance down the sweeping staircase to see her groom for the first time. A second story porch, a weeping willow tree and just a slight hint of fall foliage all made for such wonderful pictures. Did I mention Katherine’s dad’s red Corvette?! What a great getaway car! Next stop was the church for their ceremony conducted by a childhood friend of Trey’s. You can tell by the ceremony photos that there were lots of personal stories in the mix. The reception was held at the Belle Haven Country Club where we were able to make a few fun photos on the golf course before the couple joined their guests on the back patio of the club for a chilly cocktail reception. Elegant custom cocktails, funny toasts and their cake cutting with a sword and a packed dance floor were some the reception highlights. It’s always a pleasure to work with Anne Kelley at Atrendy Wedding who made sure the day ran smoothly from start to finish.

Maura + Pat’s Old Town and Belle Haven Country Club wedding

After a nice summer break I was more than ready to get to Maura and Pat’s wedding in Old Town. It was a gorgeous sunny day filled with bright colors (loved the electric blue and green theme through out the day) and lots of doggies. Riley and Rumplestiltskin, their adorable pups weren’t actually in the wedding but were very much involved. Doggie treats were given out in their honor at the local florist, they were escorted across the street from the church during the ceremony and they made their final appearance of the day for a lovely family portrait with their parents behind the church. The reception at the Belle Haven Country Club in Alexandria was a blast. Cocktail hour included a game of Cornhole and a Martini bar. Sometimes being a wedding photographer means I think I’ve seen pretty much everything that can happen at a wedding but Maura and Pat’s had some exciting new firsts for me. The gnome groom’s cake was quite a conversation piece…I still need to get the story behind that! And Maura and her friends heartfelt rendition of Madonna’s “Like a Prayer” was hysterical and culminated with the girls carrying Pat horizontally around the dance floor. I’ve never seen that before! It was great fun. They also cut their cake with Pat’s grandfather’s sword and one thing I have seen before but not recently was the “cake smush.” Maura got him good and it always makes for a good picture. And special thanks to the wonderful Ricky Carioti for second shooting with me. He always makes the day fun.

Erika + Christian’s wedding – October 10, 2010

It was a gorgeous day for a memorable wedding date. I spent 10-10-10 with Erika and Christian at their lovely wedding at Belle Haven Country Club in Alexandria. I got to spend more time with Erika than I do with most of my brides. We did a fabulous bridal portrait shoot about a month before the wedding at Oxon Hill Manor. I loved having time to focus on making really interesting portraits—something that I don’t always get time to do on the wedding date. Since the bridal gown was under wraps until Christian saw her at their first look on the big day, I wasn’t able to blog the photos until now. But I had a few I really liked so I’m including them here. And talk about bling! Take a look at Erika’s wedding band. Wow.

There were a few highlights of their wedding day in my mind. Before the ceremony, Erika’s mother had a prayer for her daughter than included the girls in the bridal party laying hands on her. Everyone was crying by the time it was over and of course, it made for some wonderful photos. I also loved Erika’s dance with all the important men in her life in lieu of the traditional father-daughter dance. Everyone kept cutting in until she ended up with her new husband! And one of my favorite photos was the late evening balcony shot of the two of them. I admit, I stole if from my friend Michael Connor and I believe in giving credit where it’s due. Holding the light behind them and shooting with me the whole day was the fabulous Ricky Carioti. And I got to work with one of my fav DJs Aaron who kept the party rocking!
