Decatur House wedding – Washington, DC

It’s been awhile between blog posts but not for lack of content. Let’s pick up again with Meghan and Mark’s beautiful St. Dominic’s Church wedding and Decatur House reception in mid-June. It was a photographer’s dream in so many respects. Starting with the bride’s preparation photos–a time when it’s often a little hit or miss depending on the light and the location. Getting ready at the Marriott Marquis in DC with wonderful window light started the day off right. All day long there was a lot of  laughter and joy mixed with a little tears. Particularly poignant throughout the day were moments between the bride and her dad since her mother had passed away. After their Catholic ceremony at St. Dominic’s we headed with the wedding party to Lafayette Square for some very fun group photos. I just love it when the whole group gets in on the fun. It was hot but sunny and it was a welcome respite when we headed into the adjacent (and air conditioned) Decatur House for some alone time with the bride + groom. The lead off shot here and the shots inside the upstairs of the house were some of my favorites. The lighting was killer! A great party followed in the Decatur House tent with candelabras and flowers, heartfelt toasts and a rocking good party. Special thanks to Sara Franklin at Social Scene Events for coordinating such a beautiful day!

Hillbrook Inn wedding Charles Town, West Virginia

The Hillbrook Inn B&B in West Virginia was such a romantic setting for Connie + Patrick’s intimate midday wedding. The lush greenery of the grounds made for a stunning backdrop for the couple as they had their first look. We took full advantage of the rustic buildings and bridges to make some wonderful portraits of the two of them. I was so impressed with Patrick’s three daughters who served as junior bridesmaids. They performed their duties beautifully and I gained a very capable assistant for the day.  Surrounded by 30 of their closest friends and family, they exchanged their vows in the sunshine. A lovely lunch wrapped up their day. As their wedding favors  with their love story pointed out–it’s amazing where a chance meeting at Starbuck’s can take you!

Hotel Monaco Alexandria Virginia wedding

I’ve spent a lot of time at the Hotel Monaco in Old Town Alexandria over the years documenting bride’s (and grooms) getting ready for their big day. K+J’s wedding was the first time I shot a full wedding there. It was a gorgeously bright sunny day but a little bit on the warm side for late spring. The couple were troopers as we walked through the quaint back streets of Old Town looking for fun portrait settings and cool backdrops for their wedding party. By the time the ceremony arrived the sun was behind the building bathing the courtyard in nice even light and cooling it down quite a bit for family and guests gathered to celebrate. Kudos and thanks to Janice Carnevale at Bellwether Events who made sure everything looked great and ran smoothly. I loved the decor–the flowers in mismatched vases and the mini Adirondack  chairs as place cards and oh yes, the District Doughnut display for a late night snack! Did I mention how much fun the party was? A little sweaty but a blast.

DACOR Bacon House wedding – E+C – Washington, DC

What a cute little gem the DACOR Bacon House is in the middle of downtown DC! When I first met with E+C on a very cold winter evening, I’d heard of the venue but it would be a new shooting experience for me which is always fun. It’s a charming historic house at 18th & F NW with lots of fun nooks and crannies for photos and a wonderful garden patio, perfect for an outdoor wedding in early May. The weather didn’t look like it would completely cooperate (but it did!) so the patio was tented but the wedding took place by the lovely trellis and marble table. I loved how much humor and warmth came through as they took their vows. Dinner was inside in the warm and inviting upstairs rooms of the house including a chandelier in the main room lit by candles. Dancing was back in the patio area where friends and family (and E’s adorable niece) kept the dance floor busy!

Airlie Center wedding – Warrenton, Virginia

Couples come to me in a variety of ways. Word of mouth recommendations, online or from others in the wedding business. Sometimes they call a year ahead of time, often six to nine months and occasionally a month or two out. Elizabeth + David were in the latter group. And as much as I like to have my schedule planned out in advance, it’s always fun to have a few last minute weddings thrown into the mix. I didn’t get to meet them before the wedding but from phone calls and emails I got a pretty good sense of them as a couple. Accomplished journalists getting married at Airlie Center–one of my favorite sites in the area–on an beautiful spring day proved to be a recipe for a fabulous day. Surrounded by their immediate family, the couple decided to forego a traditional wedding party keeping their siblings closest to them on their wedding day. And in turn, both sets of sibs delivered hysterical toasts. Some of my favorite photos of the reception were Elizabeth + David’s reaction to their speeches. There were so many great moments during the day–the lower garden ceremony, the few minutes just after the ceremony where they put their rings on the proper fingers–it was very appropriate for a journalism couple that it was the moments that mattered.

Bethesda Country Club spring wedding – Maryland

On a cooler than usual almost Memorial Day, it seems like a good time to look back on Lauren + Manny’s sophisticated and classic early spring wedding. The leaves were not quite on the trees for their big day but it was warmer than usual and the late afternoon light once we got to Bethesda Country Club was soft and romantic, just like their wedding. I loved their elegant palette of soft greys for the bridal party, white flowers with just a hint of blush and candelabras and candlelight for the reception room. Manny was incredibly dapper in his white jacket and Lauren was gorgeous in her fitted gown. The two of them together just looked so timeless and classic. Special thanks to event planner Kay at Howerton + Wooten Events for keeping everything on track and attending to all the little details that made their day so stunning.

Park Hyatt wedding – Washington, DC

To say that food was a priority at the wedding of Katy and David is an understatement. They are the owners of Eat Place in Petworth – the site of their adorable engagement session earlier this year. The Park Hyatt was the perfect host for their big day. And for me, it was a lovely marriage of food photography and wedding work. I knew Katy would be a stylish bride and not just because of her planned wardrobe change into a gorgeous red dress during the reception. I know I’m there to document the moments but I could have spent an hour just photographing her shoes! Both pairs were so cool. I also loved the décor for their reception. The ballroom was glowing in pink and orange and the centerpiece with real oranges and spices and on every table a jar of Katy’s hot sauce. Another fun touch was that during the reception no one was allowed to clink glasses to get the bride & groom to kiss..they had to get up and perform which led to some very amusing group poems and tributes.

Army Navy Club winter wedding in Washington, DC

I first met Suzanne and Ben when I arrived in NYC at the end of October for their engagement shoot. Their apartment overlooking the city was breathtaking and our whirlwind tour of their neighborhood and dinner at the fabulous Momofuku Noodle Bar and dessert from Momofuku Milk Bar were definitely foodie highlights of the trip for me. They aren’t native New Yorkers but you’d never know it—it’s always so cool for me to get shown around by people who know where they’re going! Suzanne is a decisive bride and knew that she wanted an elegant and sophisticated winter wedding. The colder the better. They got their wish with 30 degree temperatures but they were prepared–I loved her wrap and her white gloves—it just epitomized a winter wedding. They had their first look at the Hay Adams overlooking the White House and we then proceeded by vintage car driven by Suzanne’s uncle, to a church service at Memorial Metropolitan United Methodist Church near American University. Their reception at the Army Navy Club continued their theme and also included a rollicking dance party and the most fun photo booth I’ve had seen in some time. Full head masks on people in eveningwear, made for some very fun photos. 2015 is starting out on a very high note. I can’t wait photograph all the other wonderful couples I’ve got lined up for this year.

Newseum wedding – Washington, DC

The end of 2014 was busier than usual and I was very happy to end up my year with Hannah + Hal’s Newseum wedding. Their December wedding day was unseasonably warm if a little rainy. The day started at the Willard Hotel in suites with a fabulous view of the Washington Monument. I loved the sweet moments as Hannah was helped into her dress by both her mother and her soon to be mother-in-law. And when Hannah’s dad saw her in her dress for the first time…so sweet!! An adorable first look followed and then we made our way through the Christmas weekend tourists through the Newseum stopping at the Berlin Wall (which made a surprisingly cool backdrop) and the upper levels overlooking the main floor. It was nice that the Redskins/Cowboys game was on the giant screen keeping everyone occupied during the group portraits. In a day full of memorable moments, I will always remember the day as my first wedding with my daughter Hannah as my assistant! Everyone was so nice to her and she was helpful and professional. I was a proud mama for sure. Back to the wedding…the bouquets of dusty pinks and succulents were just lovely and unexpected for a winter wedding which was a nice touch. It is always a pleasure to work with Janice at Bellwether Events who pulled everything together beautifully, from the ceremony through the reception.

Baltimore, Maryland winter wedding

Quite a few aspects of  Ana + Jeremy’s small November wedding appealed to me while a couple more presented an interesting challenge. I love a small wedding as a change of pace and it’s always cool being in Baltimore. A small dinner reception at a great pizza restaurant before the ceremony mixed it up even further. The tricky part was the 9 pm ceremony in the dark at Patterson Park Pagoda.  I had some familiarity with the site having done Hannah + Hal’s engagement photos there in April. My day with Ana + Jeremy’s  started with their first look just before sunset in the park. As the light faded we explored inside and around the Pagoda and then we returned there much later in the evening for the ceremony. Thankfully the building was glowing from the inside which made for my favorite photos of the day just after sunset. It was tough to leave the warmth of the restaurant (with awesome custom pizzas) and head out into the chilly night for the ceremony. But it was pretty magical on a still dark night in the midst of the city to watch Ana and Jeremy get married while surrounded by their nearest and dearest. It was a pleasure working with event planner Stephanie Bradshaw who was nice enough to put a little bit about the wedding on her blog as well. Below are some of my favorite shots from the day.
