Kathleen + Chris’ Chevy Chase wedding – October 27, 2012

It’s hard not to admire a family that knows exactly what they want. By the time Kathleen and Chris got married on October 27, her family had been through this three previous times with Kathleen’s sisters. Each time the girls were married at Blessed Sacrament in Chevy Chase—just blocks from their house—with the reception at Chevy Chase Club. Special thanks to Kathleen’s dad who kept the trains running on time all day long. It may have been only blocks between home, church and reception but moving a large bridal party can be like herding cats. The day started at Kathleen’s family home with “Going to the Chapel” playing on a loop on the front porch of the house. One of my favorite little details from the house was the sign Kathleen had posted about all the things she was going to miss about living at home. After the ceremony it was a quick bus trip (with champagne) to the Club. We lucked into a gorgeous fall day with wonderful yellow leaves strewn across the back lawn. Needless to say, I took full advantage of the foliage. And in what I now know is Georgetown Visitation tradition (all the bride’s family when there!), the party was rocking. Particularly amusing was when the band handed out microphones so everyone could channel their inner rock star. The evening concluded with the last dance with paper flower petals thrown. In what I think was supposed to be a solo dance, the couple instead was mobbed on the floor for one last rollicking song.

Nicole + Michael’s wedding – October 13, 2012 – Vienna, VA and Washington Golf and Country Club, Arlington, VA

Finally–a swimming bride! That sounds like an odd statement but considering how immersed my family has become in swimming over the last 4-5 years I felt like I’d met kindred spirits in Nicole and her mom. Nicole is a swim coach for York Swim Club in Arlington, a group that my kids see often at swim meets in the metropolitan area. We both live in the world of swim practice, meets, chlorine and carpools. Nicole’s bridal party was a great reflection lasting friendships formed at the pool—they all were swimmers. I have great admiration for these coaches who like teachers play such a critical role in the lives of the young kids they spend time with daily.

Enough about swimming, on to the wedding! Nicole and Michael picked a glorious fall day to get married in their hometown of Vienna. I was a little jealous of the groom and groomsmen who got to go to the Vienna Inn before the ceremony. That’s another long story for a different blog post but I used to hang out there—more for the atmosphere than the famous chili dogs.  The day started with a lovely ceremony at Vienna Presbyterian Church followed by a little hiking around the church for portraits and then the trip to Washington Golf and Country Club for the reception. It’d been a couple years since I’d been there and I was happy to make good use of the white Adirondack chairs and the balcony with columns overlooking the golf course. And one last swimming note and maybe a cautionary lesson for me…those swimmers (and everyone else there) know how to have a good time. The dance floor was packed all night long and yes, I saw the York group having a particularly good time!!

Heidi + Brian’s wedding – October 6, 2012 – Gaithersburg, Maryland

I’m sure I first saw Heidi several years ago at her best friend’s Jackie’s wedding. Jackie and Sean’s wedding was one of the first I photographed after starting my own business. It definitely felt like a family affair when Julia, another former bride–and Jackie’s sister –did Heidi’s wedding day makeup (impeccably I might add). Jackie and Sean’s adorable daughter Kaelyn was the flower girl. Heidi and Brian are such a fun couple and their wedding day was filled with laughs. Starting with the bride’s walk down the aisle. Kaelyn made it down the aisle but didn’t throw any rose petals. Luckily Heidi’s dad had snagged a few and threw them as they walked.  Heidi and Brian were very expressive and laughed a lot during the ceremony until the tears began to flow as the couple made their presentation to the Virgin Mary. I’d like to give a shout out to Heidi who was totally agreeable to getting into a swan paddle boat in her wedding dress.  The Washingtonian Center in Gaithersburg adjacent to their reception site has a little lake and I thought it would be a very cool picture. It turned out to be of my favorites of the day and she didn’t hesitate for a bit. Heidi is a kickboxer and she and Brian incorporated that into their reception entrance. Brian came out first and was handed a pad while Heidi ran in, purple boxing gloves on for a friendly one-two punch. The dance floor was rocking all night and it was the first time—and not the last for this wedding season—I’d seen everyone doing the dance to “Gangam Style.” And I’m not usually a huge fan of the bouquet and garter toss but the sequence of Brian taking the garter off was great and the garter part of the ritual is usually uncomfortable and quick. This time, the couple was an actual couple and boy, did he get into it! Again, it made for funny photos. One thing that made me laugh out loud as I was editing the wedding photos was something I didn’t notice while I was shooting. Heidi’s Grammy—who spent a good part of the night on the dance floor—is in the single girl line up to catch the bouquet!!

Austin + Andrew’s wedding – September 29, 2012 – Morven Park, Leesburg, Virginia

Austin and Andrew picked a glorious fall day to celebrate their wedding. They also made full use of the whole day. It was my longest wedding day to date but it all went off without a hitch. There was a touch of fall in the air as they made their way to the church for their 11 am ceremony. I loved the pops of color from the sunflower bouquets and all the cute kids in the wedding just made for really fun photos all day long. We got a little break for lunch in Leesburg then headed to the reception site at Morven Park for portraits. I had such a blast with the lovely light and the adorable couple and a vintage Rolls…it was really fun to have time to try out a few locations on the grounds. Morven Park is a lesser known place but completely charming with it’s historic house and gardens and rolling hills. Not to mention a Civil War encampment!  And I just loved the shot of Austin climbing the ladder on the side of the carriage house. All her idea…and there were thorns on those bushes! The tented reception was a great party…lots of dancing to keep folks warm, ending with a lovely sparkler send off.

Julia + Vasily – September 23, 2012 – Glenview Mansion, Rockville, Maryland

Julia and Vasily are continuing a trend for me this year. Couples who get married before their ceremony! The two were married in March but planned a lovely ceremony and party with close friends and family in September. They chose the fabulous Glenview Mansion and luckily the first fall day where the air started to feel crisp and sort of like fall. Highlights of the day included the toasts by the father of the bride and father of the groom outside the Mansion, just before guests went inside for dinner. This is where I found out that in the Russian tradition after a toast the champagne is declared “bitter” and the bride and groom must kiss to add sweetness. This happened a lot during the night. The dance floor was crowded for a swing dance lesson from Dabe and Janelle who do a great job of getting everyone to try some new steps. And Vasily’s Russian family and friends serenaded the happy bride and groom with a traditional song to wish them good luck and they danced around in a circle.

Natalie + Hank’s wedding – Washington, DC and Great Falls, Virginia

Some brides plan their weddings for years and sweat all the little details. Natalie planned her wedding in four months. I think it’s fair to say she just wasn’t that into the planning process but thankfully, her mother Linda, more than took up the mantle they were able to plan an amazing affair. Natalie + Hank’s day was elegant and formal and tons of fun. One of my many day weddings this year, they started with their full Mass at St. Peter’s Catholic Church on Capitol Hill. Natalie is a Georgetown Visitation girl so it really wouldn’t have been any other way. Then we were off to the Capitol for group shots and finally on to Natalie’s parents house in Great Falls. To say they have an amazing spread there doesn’t do it justice. And the tent that was erected for the reception was easily one of the best I’ve ever seen. With the Bloody Mary Bar, the Oyster Bar, the Mason jars of salad (!!) cigar and Adirondack chairs outside and the exquisite flower throughout the tent—I was just bowled over. Of course, I was very happy to catch up with Natalie’s bridesmaid Maura (and her husband Pat) at the wedding…Maura was one of my favorite brides from last year and is particularly memorable for the photos we did of her and Pat and their adorable doggies. Sometimes day wedding receptions are sedate affairs with little dancing–something to do with not enough alcohol consumed so early in the day. But I wasn’t worried…those Visi girls know how to have fun. Some of my favorite photos of the day came when Natalie and her girls were the dancing stage. Maybe one reason Natalie wasn’t so wedding-obsessed is because days after the wedding, she and Hank headed to Paris for his next State Department posting. A honeymoon and a new adventure rolled into one.

Allison + Greg’s Newseum wedding – July 7, 2012

I’ve been wanting to blog Allison + Greg’s wedding for a while now and it throws my world into a little bit of a tailspin when I post my weddings out of order. I was very excited about this wedding. This was my first Newseum wedding and it is by far my favorite museum in town. I’ve been there several times with my family and since my husband and I are/were both in the newspaper business, we’re like kids in a candy store when we’re there. Allison + Greg have such a great story.  They were briefly boyfriend and girlfriend in the 7th grade in the 1970s and through Facebook they reconnected in the last couple years and the rest as they say, is history. So the wedding was a true reflection of the scope of their relationship with amazing details like adorable place cards that looked like school library checkout cards, their junior high and high school diplomas on display, thei signature heart with initials inside, gluten-free cakes on several of the tables depicting some aspect of their lives both together and separately, a program containing a crossword puzzle all about the couple. Greg proposed to Allison through a crossword so there was a crossword cake and Greg work crossword cufflinks and a crossword tie. Seriously, not a detail was overlooked. Sara Bauleke and her team from Bella Notte transformed the space at the Newseum for a great party. The main floor was used for dinner and dancing and the gigantic screen played a bit part in the décor of the event. Slideshows ran during the first dance with photos of the couple in junior high school, high school, college, together, separate, right up to the present day. Also flashing on the screen was a screen grab from the initial FB contact between the two! It made for a really dramatic backdrop. As I was roaming the museum looking for fun vantage points I also came across the Newseum security control room and it just struck me as funny seeing all the dancing and the heart logo displayed on their multiple screen. And in case all that wasn’t enough, it was a rocking party—lots of oldies playing, a swing dance demonstration and lesson and a flash mob to Pink’s “Raise Your Glass.”

Camille + Adam’s waterfront wedding – August 19, 2012 – York, Maine

I know that not everyone would consider it a great final day of family vacation to shoot a wedding.  But for Camille and Adam’s day it was exactly where I wanted to be. I was able to use their wedding as an excuse to travel Maine for a week before the wedding and it was so great to be away with my husband and kids exploring new territory—and eating as much lobster as we could. And I must admit, I have a soft spot for Posties (Washington Post employees) getting married. I’m sure it has something to do with the fact that I met and married my wonderful husband while we both worked at the Post. Camille is the high school sports editor for the paper and Adam is the beat reporter for the Washington Nationals. It was a treat for me to see so many familiar faces at the wedding—the sports staff was well represented with current and former employees. The wedding and reception took place along the water at an adorable guesthouse in York, Maine near Adam’s hometown. One of the highlights of the day for me was the ceremony conducted by Post reporter Eli Saslow. A good friend to both the bride and groom, he did an amazing job recounting the couple’s courtship—it was funny and touching and so revealing of their personalities. And I got to coach him to step out of the way for the kiss—I wish I could do that with every officiant I photograph. The party turned out to be a rocking shindig, particularly for a day wedding where people tend to not dance as much. And in a first for me (you know how much I like to document the firsts I see at a wedding!), the bride, groom and groom’s twin brother went up in chairs. Did I mention that this was not a Jewish wedding?

Vicky + Andy’s wedding – Washington, DC – Holy Rosary Catholic Church + National Museum for Women in the Arts

Oh how I love to photograph the weddings of my former bridesmaids/groomsmen! Although I didn’t recognize Vicky the first time we met to discuss her plans, she looked a little familiar. I began to show her images from Laura + Sam’s Carnegie Institute wedding from last summer and sure enough…there she was! I even had a cute photo of  Vicky + Andy  dancing included in the slide show. Their engagement shoot sealed the deal for me. We had a great afternoon together starting at Masa 14, the site of their first date and ending up at the WWII Memorial. They are a downtown Washington couple and the wedding day reflected their love of the city.  Their ceremony at Holy Rosary was lovely and as seen the photos, a bit of a laugh fest. Catholic ceremonies aren’t known for their humor but Vicky came down with a case of the giggles during the ceremony and it made for some very animated photos.  We then made an attempt to stop traffic on Pennsylvania Ave. We did it without getting run over thanks to our very accommodating bus driver who blocked a lane of traffic.  I particularly love the running down the street photos. And I’d be remiss not to mention the “Bridesmaids” inspired shot for the girls. It was all Vicky’s idea and it worked out beautifully. It makes such a difference when everyone in the bridal party is willing to cooperate and play a part—it can make traditionally boring group shots really stand out. The icing on the (wedding) cake for me was a chance to shoot at the National Museum of Women in the Arts. It’s such a gorgeous room without being overwhelming and that staircase is just fabulous. And a special shout out to Sara Muchnick of Engaging Affairs who made sure everything ran on time and without a hitch!

Patricia + Manny’s Rehoboth Beach wedding – June 30, 2012

Any discussion of Patricia + Manny’s wedding has to start with Hurricane Irene. They were scheduled to get married in Rehoboth Beach Delaware August 27, 2011. The weather that day conspired against them and they had to postpone the wedding. They did, however, go on their honeymoon as scheduled and they tied the knot while they were away. But they were determined to have what they’d originally planned…a Greek Orthodox service and a lovely country club reception. Fast forward to June 30, 2012 and they finally made it legal in front of their friends and family. Not without a little more weather though. Turns out they were married the day after a derecho roared through DC creating major havoc. Oh, and the temperature on their wedding day was about 100 degrees with 100 percent humidity. But they couldn’t have been happier. Rehoboth was spared the storm and everyone held up well in the heat. The little church a block from the beach was such a great place for an intimate service. It was too hot to trek to the boardwalk so we opted for waterfront photos at the country club where a nice breeze helped everyone get through the heat and onto the party!
