Washington DC food photography – Chef portraits

In my job as a freelance food photographer, I am well aware that I have the enviably job of traveling around the Washington, DC area, photographing plates of gorgeous food. Often when I’m on assignment for the Washington Post or other editorial clients, I’m asked to take a portrait of the chef as well.

Chef portraits present a couple of unique challenges. Often when I arrive at the restaurant, it’s my first time there, so I quickly have to assess the light and decide where best to take the portrait. I approach these as portraits of artists, many who aren’t that keen to be in front of the camera. I work to make these as creative as possible, as I do with my couples in their wedding and wedding engagement photos. The chefs have often been photographed many times before so I am looking for new angles and interesting lighting. I’ve collected some of my favorite chef portraits and even more of them can be seen here.

So if you’re looking for advice on where to eat in DC that’s fun and new–get in touch, I’ve got you covered!

Family portraits – Deb Lindsey Photography

Family portraits are the next logical step in the photographic journey of a couple and it’s so fun to for me to watch a family grow and flourish. So I thought it was time for a roundup of some of the family photo sessions I’ve done recently. As a mother of two older teenagers, I know how fleeting it is when the kids are small and how important it is to get everyone in the photo. Most of my family photos don’t include me–except for the ones where we hired a photographer to get that elusive holiday card photo.

Although I primarily consider myself a wedding photographer I think a more accurate statement would be that I love photographing people. And food, but that’s a different blog post!

I appreciate the posed family photos that I do and why they’re important, but my absolute favorite images are those that happen in the off moments. The photo of George and his dad just below is a prime example. Capturing the relationships and the lifestyle makes for the memorable photos!

Family portraits – Silver Spring, Maryland

It is such a treat for me to spend time with this adorable (and growing) family. I met them last year when H was pregnant and they wanted some family photos with their young daughter and then again once their baby boy was born. They are so completely willing to let me document their interaction with each other and some of my favorite photos from the first session were the three of them jumping on the bed. We recreated that (sort of) again this time including baby A. Such natural photos of them playing, blowing bubbles, playing airplane and on the floor with Legos are so much fun for me to shoot and for them, they get a nice slice of their life with their young family.

Family portraits Alexandria, Virginia – Henry + Connor

Henry is always a little suspicious when I show up with my camera. In spite of that, I love catching up with Maura and Pat (who was missed on this trip!) and their growing family. I was excited to meet their newest addition Connor who while he wasn’t suspicious I wouldn’t say he was thrilled to be photographed. Together we managed to make some sweet photos and three weeks after giving birth Maura looked amazing.

Family portraits – summer edition!

For a little change of pace, here are some recent favorites from two family portrait sessions. Both are doing multiple shoots which is especially fun for me. I get to document these little ones as they grow and change over the course of a year. Naomi is gaining a sibling in the fall so the family wanted to do some informal family photos before and after the new arrival. It was such a blast hanging out with them, playing peek a boo and hiding under the covers and then heading to the local park. For George, this was our second session of three and it was quite a change from our first one in February. His personality is starting to shine and I love his adorable nursery.

Baby Gracie – Great Falls, VA

I just love catching up with my former brides and grooms as their families grow. Gracie was a willing and smiley subject for a beautiful morning photo session at her grandparent’s house in Great Falls. She lives with her parents in Paris so I’ve already put in my request for a Parisian photo shoot…

Chu + David engagement session – Meadowlark Gardens Vienna, VA

A little mid-week love from my recent engagement session with Chu + David. Lovely late August blooms at the park and three wardrobe changes made for some very cute photos. Looking forward to their wedding coming up in just a few weeks.

Catching up…

Just a little pre-Labor Day love from two of my fabulous couples. After a very relaxing August I’m happy to post photos from two engagement shoots done over the summer. I had fun hanging with Brenna + Joe in my neck of the woods in Potomac and on the C&O Canal while Christine + Lance and I explored the Capitol grounds on a lovely summer’s evening. Can’t wait for both weddings in October + December. Happy Labor Day and look for Chu + David’s engagement session on the blog next week 🙂

Happy New Year (baby)!

After a wonderful time over the holidays with friends and family it’s time to get back to work…sort of. I had the pleasure of shooting these two adorable babies right around the holidays. I was so happy to see Anna again–I did her first photo shoot a year ago when she was just a couple weeks old. Stella was a new acquaintance. Really new–12 days old! She was such a good girl, posing solo and with her family including big sis Lauren. But I think the most notable thing about Stella was her hairdo. She had a perfectly coiffed head of hair. It was quite stylish for one so young. 🙂 And I’m particularly fond of the feet shot…

Sarah’s portrait 2-4-11

I met Sarah when she was about 2 months old. She was tiny, especially compared to my daughter Hannah who was 4 months old at the time. Back in the days when two months made a huge difference. Now both girls are 13 and it’s exciting and unnerving to see them turning into young ladies. I was honored to photograph Sarah on her 13th birthday after her bat mitzvah hair and makeup trial. So she’s looking a little more sophisticated than normal but what a beautiful teenager!
