Wedding Engagements – part two

Welcome back to part two of this fall’s DC area wedding engagements!! There were a couple revelations for me along the way. As much as I enjoy returning to old favorites like the National Mall and Old Town Alexandria, I got to explore some new locations. It seems impossible that I’d never done an engagement session at the now iconic Union Market hearts mural but with Bryan and Meg I got my chance. Photographing in Alexandria is always fun and with Marina and Cal we explored some old favorites (Prince Street and the alley nearby) and chased the beautiful fall sunlight. Finally in my last session of the year, Laura and Jordan I spent time in downtown Annapolis–not a new location for me but it’s been quite awhile since I’d been there. We managed to catch the last gasp of fall color with some of the trees near the State House. So if you’ve just gotten engaged or know someone who has–give me a buzz! And if you need a little advice on how to prepare for an engagement session check out this blog post. Happy New Year and looking forward to all the couples I’ll be working with in 2018!!

Wedding Engagements – part one

Did you know that the period between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day is what we in the wedding industry call engagement season? As we near the peak engagement frenzy, I thought it was a good time to show some of the engagement sessions I’ve had throughout the year. Many are in recognizable locations like the Lincoln and Jefferson Memorials, Old Town Alexandria and Union Market and Meridian Hill Park and outside Nats Park. And also my first photo shoot inside a DC Public Library in Georgetown. It was also really fun to have the run of the place at Merriweather Post Pavillion in Columbia for Dennis + Megan’s session. Stay tuned for more to come later this week of some fall wedding engagements around town!

Meadowlark Gardens wedding engagement session

Meadowlark Gardens in Vienna, Virginia is one of those go-to places where any time of year you can plan a wonderful wedding engagement session. This was particularly important for Kelly + Nate who are getting married in February. Short sleeves and pretty flowers blooming may be a little harder to find!! It was a glorious summer day (those clouds!! that light!!) and we had fun making their photos unique in a popular spot. As much as I love their portraits and their wonderful interaction, one of my favorite photos is their Nerf gun fight. The couple does this for fun and it’s a running joke that Kelly can never hit Nate. So I was very proud of my photo with the Nerf dart inches from Nate…perfect aim. And his reaction to it was just terrific. I’m so excited for their February wedding at Army Navy Country Club!

Wedding engagement slide show – Washington, DC

This week’s plan to do a post with all my recent fun wedding engagement sessions got a bit derailed this morning. I received an email from a special MOB (mother of the bride) who wanted to know if I’d do a slide show with their favorite images from the recent engagement session I did with her daughter and her fiance around Washington, DC.

I had so much fun with Hayley and Neil this summer as we took photos at the Jefferson Memorial (Neil is a UVA grad) and around Nationals Park (they’re both big Bryce Harper fans). We had a really short window to get the session done since Neil is heading back to military training and I’m thankful we had such a nice day. One shot included in the slide show was a special request from the bride-to-be. She had a copy of her mother’s wedding day photo of her parents sitting (yes, sitting in a wedding dress) along the edge of the Tidal Basin. Her dad was in full uniform and the pose was a little awkward and hard to hold without almost falling in. But we recreated it with great success.

Previously I’ve only done slide shows for weddings (and occasionally for other events) but never for an engagement session and WOW did I love the result. So while I work on my next post here’s is the slide show I made with the couple’s favorite images. And I’m now thinking this needs to be a regular thing.

Old Town Alexandria Wedding Engagement Portraits

It’s almost summer and wedding and wedding engagement portrait season is upon us. Taking advantage of a gorgeous sunny day recently in Old Town Alexandria, it was such a pleasure to spend time with J+C for their engagement portrait session. It’s always exciting for me to find new and different (at least for me!) spots throughout the city. For instance, I knew about the Wilkes Tunnel was there but in all my photography in Old Town, I had never done any photos there. I’m so glad we did this time! And kudos to whoever painted that garage door at the Torpedo Factory. That was a late in the day find. I am really looking forward to their Carnegie Institution for Science wedding in October this year!

Brookside Gardens wedding engagement session

Brookside Gardens in Wheaton is a lovely spot for a wedding engagement session. Anytime of year is pretty there but when the roses are blooming in late spring, it is a wonderland. R + D chose the grounds near where they grew up for their wedding engagement session and between the sun and the flowers I was in photography heaven. I can’t wait until their summer wedding coming up fast at the Gaylord at National Harbor.

Check out some of my other wedding engagement sessions!

Lincoln Memorial wedding engagement session

The Lincoln Memorial is such an iconically DC spot for an wedding engagement session! Some years I spend more time photographing couples on the National Mall and particularly at Lincoln than anywhere else in DC.

Brendan and Nick are getting married in Provincetown, MA next fall and since they live (and met) in Washington DC, they wanted to make sure we had some photographs that were recognizably Washington. We began at their home in Columbia Heights for some very necessary photos including their pup Juliet and then made our way downtown on a brisk fall day. My assistant for this session (seen in shadows in one of the B&W photographs) was my darling daughter, who has had Brendan as her ceramics teacher for all four years in high school. To say this was a special photography session for me is an understatement.

I was also thrilled to have the photo session appear on United With Love. I can’t wait for their wedding in September!

Meridian Hill Park, DC wedding engagement

There’s a reason why I wait until sunny days to do my wedding engagement sessions and this beauty at Meridian Hill Park (one of my favorite spots for an wedding engagement session) was no exception. I don’t have any control over the weather on the wedding day but I do when we schedule a wedding engagement session!

I had so much fun with H+E at the park and exploring their neighborhood. I can’t wait for their Carnegie Institution for Science wedding in September.

Washington, DC spring wedding engagement sessions

Spring is a beautiful time to be taking photos as a wedding and engagement photographer in Washington DC, I do manage to avoid formal sessions in the middle of the cherry blossoms but only because there are so many other glorious options to find blooms in the spring in DC.

Three recent sessions included the National Portrait Gallery,  the National Gallery of Art Sculpture Garden , the columns at and gigantic door at the National Archives including a floor strewn with confetti after the annual Cherry Blossom Parade and even some trees near the Archives metro station. Another one of my favorite spots any time of year for wedding engagements is Dumbarton Oaks in Georgetown where the honeysuckle was in bloom.

I love photographing couples for their wedding engagement portraits. It’s such a great way to get to know them before I photograph their wedding and it allows us to explore some other locations besides where they’ll be getting married!!

Petworth DC wedding engagement

My first wedding engagement session of 2015 was with Katy + David in their restaurant/kitchen space  Eats Place, in Petworth, DC. In addition to showcasing Katy’s dumplings, they hosts guests chefs and and pop up eateries. It was great fun to explore their space inside and out, including the downstairs kitchen and a quick upstairs visit with their adorable pup. Their wedding is this Saturday at the Park Hyatt, a mecca for foodie weddings.

The Park Hyatt is one of my favorites locations for elegant and modern weddings in DC.
